Today, I could smell random smells. They just came to my nose. They weren't from anything in the house. It was weird. Does anyone know what this is?

smelling odors that are not there is called phantom smells. its a type of hallucination. its pretty much a normal thing. everyone gets this from time to time.

that said it can also signal problems like having a mental disorder where hallucinations is a symptom, ear infections, sinus infections, epilepsy or any other number of problems.

my suggestion - you may want to consider contacting your treatment providers so that you can rule out any of the mental or physical health problems that are associated with odor type, phantom or olfactory (which ever word your treatment providers use for this type of hallucinations) as a precaution.

Have you started taking any new medications or more of some you were taking before or a different combination? I often have trouble with my sense of smell with certain drugs.

Hi happycheeks,

I have epilepsy and I get the smells, having one I have a lot of at the moment, cigarette smoke; that isn't real good because I'm a non-smoker

I don't honestly think it is a thing "most people" have, the way epileptics do; the other reason I know of for phantom smells is schizophrenia. Definitely not saying you have that, I wouldn't have a clue about that, it's just one of the reasons.

I don't hear voices but when I try to sleep, I do. But that's normal. I have had millions of times when I had sleep paralysis and that could be linked in with epilepsy.

I get phantom smells as part of PTSD. It goes away eventually.

Hope you're free of them now.

Thanks for this!
