what the? ... well, it bothers me too... i'm not quite sure why either. but it has to do with those... openings, bumps, eyes coming out of her skin... it's almost like a "ew" shiver wants to come along, but it doesn't and i just keep looking at it wondering why i find it so weird and bothersome when its obviously just computer editing almost made out to look like gobs of gems on her skin.. but... really odd gems at that. 0.o
Edit: It's kinda like how the pictures look if you cut a bone in half and all those weird holes and such, and i can't quit looking at it, but it bothers me at the same time. it's the same with this pic. lol

Scales, and teeth. If everything is working properly, you should feel an aversion.

I have a theory on this.
It looks like worms embedded in the skin. That is common in some of the poorer countries, africa is the one place I can think of off the top of my head and I can't remember what the name of the worm is. But on anyhand, it looks sort of parasitic - and by our very nature we are inclined to dislike the idea of any sort of parasite. We dislike anything that could make us sick, take over our bodies, change our thinking - because we are geared to LIVE. This is the same reason differences freak us out, because anything we see as different the brain often classes as Dangerous Until Proven Otherwise, in some cases like Phobia, that becomes completely wound tighter than it should be. So i think in the long run, the reason this creeps us out is both that it is different and parasitic. |

I agree with Mandiepoo in that it looks parasitic or like a disease, which automatically causes me to hesitate. Pain and discomfort comes immediately to mind and makes me uncomfortable for her, but then I see her smiling which throws me off. Odd, somewhat creepy sensation looking at this photo.

I think you feel an aversion to this picture because it was designed to create this aversion. Nothing abnormal about the way you feel.
Variations of this picture have been hitting my spam email address for some time now. The "worms" are actually just seeds but they have been photoshopped onto every single part of the human body one can imagine. It's designed to shock and horrify, but is completely fake. http://www.snopes.com/photos/medical/breastrash.asp the snopes link above does have some links on it that are quite disturbing. Wouldn't click on them if I were you unless you really want to.

I think most people would find the photo disgusting because it triggers our basic fear -getting deathly ill and a parasite invading our body. I don't know why someone would even want to photo shop a pic like this. Thanks to elliemay for debunking that one photo and thanks to Indie for spotting there is a phobia called trypophobia. I found a link of the subject.
There are some parasites that will bore under the skin and lays eggs. There's also a worm that needs to be ingested (dirty water)...grows very long ..... borrows under the surface of the skin and eventually comes out - they're completely gross. There's a certain fly in some foreign country that lays an egg under the skin too - can't remember the name. I think google should remove these kind of photos. If someone did have openings like this they would be on their death bed. http://trypophobia.net/tag/fear-of-holes

There's a saying, "the holes in my head fit the rocks in yours" which tells me something about how people function together. This picture reminded me of that.

I'd have to say that the eerie thing here isn't so much the image as a whole; when I first got a glance at it I thought they were scales and wasn't repelled. But when one looks closer and sees the plastic-like holes and the strange things embedded in her skin, coupled with her happiness for the strange mutation, I believe the brain is simply wired to be afraid of something that not only looks painful but just plain unnatural.

To me it looks like extreme self-injury and her smiling is so incongruous it is unnerving. Yuk, I'm fascinated as to how they did the make-up to look so real.

It's almost certainly picture manipulation with something like Photoshop, not makeup. For instance, most of the pattern on her left elbow is identical to the one on her right, imperfections and all.
I don't know about why anyone else's aversion. To me, if those implant thingies were for real they'd feel extremely uncomfortable. I can imagine them hurting or itching and being hard to keep clean -- and never being able to use an armrest that was any harder than a pillow. I think the girl who posed for the picture was grinning about the mischief that she knew was being planned. ![]() |
