In wanting to update a life assurance policy, I learned today that no insurance company will touch me because of my medical history, hospitilizations and because I have been on medication. I am considered an "insurance risk". Added to that, my existing policy that I have had and been paying for 20 years is apparantly now worthless due to my suicide attempts.

While I do understand that insurance companies need to safeguard themselves .... I cannot help but feel stigmatized.

And just plain sad!

Guess I will have to stash under the mattress from now on.

Again huh!! insurance is a big effing rip off!!! The sales team are so good at bullsh*tting us to sign on the dotted line and yet when it comes to us making a claim and getting back some of what we have paid in its a big fat NO..........

If you read the small print (better still, understand their mad legal ramblings) it will tell you what you can or cannot claim for and how you can't claim if there are pre existing health problems, i.e., if you smoke and get lung cancer or similar, they wont pay out. Maybe they will pay out if we got whisked away by aliens or attacked by a rogue breed of cockroaches....... who knows??

Biggest huggles hons, sorry to hear you are getting messed around by insurance companies.

Grrrr. Usually an insurance policy won't pay the first 2 or 3 years of buying the insurance, if it's for suicide. However, if you have ongoing life insurance, unless it's written in there, they can't cancel for attempts, imo.

IMO the only ppl who need life insurance are those with a spouse and young children who will need that money to continue a decent life.

As for health insurance, I am uninsurable for any new company, which is why I have no choice but to keep what I have and pay whatever premiums they want.

Have someone look over your policy, and see what it can afford you. IDK that's a long time to be paying for life insurance you probably don't need now anyway.

But isn't it frustrating to find something you've relied upon to be ..untrustworthy? TC

Well, the thing is I do need it as it was the only bit of security that I had. My pension disappeared prematurely on medical debt.
My son is only 8 years old! I think I need to get him into pro golfing or something so that he can make a lot of money and look after me one day!

grrrrr. Yes, you are the person who needs life insurance. Only 1 in 13,000 children make it big in sports, btw. Please have a legal expert read your policy (unless it says flat out that in the event of any attempt...policy is automatically cancelled) IF that's true, then you should at the very least be able to collect back all the premiums you've paid since the first attempt, as they collected money for a cancelled policy at that point. Thanks Sky. My broker is digging into the situation to see what can be saved.

As for my son making it big in sports ... well I can always dream! At the moment, play station is far more appealing!
