Lizardlady---Totally the same. I've never been a fru fru sort of girl and as a teen and young adult I took some teasing for it. Still do sometimes. That combined with a short pixie haircut and minimal use of makeup, well, you can guess some of the comments I've endured.

I've always been a bit 'off' in many ways and most days I can endure the odd looks or wayward comments but lately it seems as though there has been a slew of them and I resent it
I frequently wear my hair short and don't wear make-up. Before I gained weight and grew a backside I used to get "hey fella" a lot. People have also questioned if I was gay for the same reasons. In school it wasn't questions, it was rude statements and they didn't say "gay."

I was thinking of this thread earlier today while I was doing some landscaping. I had on tennies, a sports bra and jeans shorts with a my hair pulled into a ponytail and a bandana around my head to soak up the sweat. When I started to burn I added a ratty looking frayed t-shirt. By the time I finished everything I had on was soaked with sweat and I wasd blacvk from head to toe with mud and dirt packed under my nails. The fu-fu police would've hauled me off if they saw me! Me? I was tickled with the way the garden/yard looked when I got done.

I don't like the word "weird". You are who you are. I accept you.

Like the t-shirt - jeans - sneakers style, couldn't imagine ever wearing anything else. It doesn't really matter what age someone has, as long as they feel good in the clothes they wear it's fine. Especially like seeing people wear converses, guess they have something magical as they always make us smile.

I think you should wear what you want and ignore people's opinions.

frog,

I've been thinking about your post all day. Why do you care what is age appropriate? Wear what makes you happy? Converse sneakers make you happy. Wear them. My brother used to wear them. Reading your post brought back good memories, even though he used to try pro wrestling moves on me.

Jeans and T-shirts are fine. Be free.

1776,

Normally I don't get caught up in it so much but as I said, I've been running into a slew of individuals lately who seem to think I'm odd for my manner of dress. It's kinda like being able to absorb one random insult and forget about it vs. hearing several insults. Makes a stronger impact and makes you wonder "WTF?"

Perhaps there is a part of you who is also questioning? I agree that when a lot of people are nasty it can disturb even the most assured but maybe there is a way of making yourself feel more comfortable? I don't know how brightly you dress but maybe toning down the colours a bit and keeping an eye on detail/fit might be the best way to go. Despite the onslaught of garishness by Converse and many brands alike there are some better styles out there. You just have to fish for them these days. A black pair, neutral slacks and a not too detailed graphic t shouldn't really incite hatred though - why would it? From what's written here it appears a pretty common style of dress so if this IS what you're wearing then others are either jealous or have more deeply routed insecurity. Both aren't worth your time and if you surround yourself with as much acceptance and kindness from those who celebrate who you are - hopefully the ugly comments will fade more into the background.

I agree, wear wht makes you feel good. My mom is 73 and can get away with wearing teenager style clothes, not sleezy but comfortable looking clothes and does wear the converse sneakers too. She looks younger than me, i'm 52, and she is 73.

I'm 30 and I wear Spongebob and Metalocalypse, so don't feel bad. It's not weird. If it is, then I must be crazy.

In the past, when you saw older people (I'm really talking about much older than 40 but still), they did not wear the same type of clothes as the young people. The reason was very simple. They wore the type of clothes popular as when they were young.

Then there has been this misunderstanding that there is a special type of clothes that older people should wear, and that is what the last old generation wore, but they only did because they grew up with it.

Get it?

So, it is quite natural to still want to wear what you wore when you were young. People have done it in the past, it is the whole reason behind thinking of a style "made for" an age group.

I'm 62 and I usually wear jeans and a tee shirt too. I'm home all day so I dress comfortable.....not a thing wrong with your wardrobe.
