When you check to see who is online, and they are listed as "private", what does that mean?

This came up in the Tech Support forum just recently. According to Sky's post there (forgive me if I'm breaking rules by quoting someone else's post somewhere else),
<<If you go inactive but stay logged in, are reading quizzes, or home page or resources, it also shows Private. >> |
