On the "Who's Online" list under location, sometimes members are listed as their location being Private.

More for curiosity's sake, but where are you on the board, and how does that location list as being "Private"?

Any insight welcomed, like I said just am curious.

I think you can set it so that it always says 'private' on your options. You get the option to conceal yourself when you are logged in and you get a seperate option to conceal your location when you are logged in so people can't see what you are up to.

I'm pretty sure that is what is going on.

If you go inactive but stay logged in, are reading quizzes, or home page or resources, it also shows Private. It also tells if you are in the gallery, or reviewing, replying/deleting a private message, making a new post, checking who's online, or are in chat.

This question has come up before. I've asked it myself with no luck .....

http://forums.psychcentral.com/showf...b=5&o=&fpart=1

"If you go inactive but stay logged in, are reading quizzes, or home page or resources, it also shows Private" is probably the best and most logical explanation to date!

Hmmm... I guess I should have done a search first, lol.

Thanks Sabrina.

In your Profile, "Personal Information" at the bottom, second to last questions is, "Do you want users to see the actual forum/post you are looking at?" -- radio button "no" and wherever you are, whatever you're doing others won't see.

Even when the "no" is selected, there are still some that show as private and others that show as "reading a post in flat mode" or "reviewing a list of forums". (Mine is selected as "no" yet I have never ever shown up as private).

Sky's explanation that being inactive but still logged on causing it to show up as private makes sense.

I don't know if we can ever see ourselves as "private." When we look at ourselves in the list we might see something different from when someone else looks at us, because it's "us" rather than someone else. Wouldn't make sense for the software not to tell us where we were. Mine is selected as "yes" (but the question is about wanting "others" to see not about ourselves) and always tells me "checking who's online" when I'm checking. How could it say anything else since we can't be two places at once (no matter how many windows we have open as there's only one of us) and how could we know since we can't check outselves?

The way you have just described it also makes perfect sense.

It certainly is always beneficial to see it from someone elses "shoes".

I am glad this question is getting some postive and helpful attention at last.

I'm just playing, Sabrina, don't mean to sound like I'm poking holes in you/your knowledge. It just fascinates me how others see us versus how we see ourselves, etc. in reality and with software :-) (((Sabrina))) Sometimes online I forget the rules are different and think what I see is what "is" when that can be not the case. Can't trust your senses as much online I don't think, too much hidden behind the curtain.

Oh my, I certainly don't have any "knowledge". Perhaps a bit of experience ..........

I do think that you explained things that made sense though.

And as this question has been asked a multitude of times without an answer ... it seems we are getting somewhere - and that is just great!

Thank you for you valuable input!
