Hi All,

Severe weather is starting early in Kansas this year. I spent an hour in my tornado closet with four dogs a couple of hours ago. Thankfully, the tornado went south of us. We will still be under a watch until 2:00 a.m.

I would like anyone who grew up in the Midwest to tell me if you ever get used to this weather.

EJ

Jane I didn't grow up there but spent 3 yrs there. I got very use to it but then again I live on the other end of tornado alley. here in Ga they are much more devastating in my opinion in that they hit homes more than in kansas. wheat fields there alot. although they do hit houses too sometimes. but I did get a little use to the constant warnings

Bebop,

You helped me realize why I'm struggling with our severe weather tonight. We're not supposed to be getting this stuff until May!!!

I don't have a basement in this house either, so that doesn't help with feeling safe and protected either.

Hugs,

EJ

Hi Pilatus,

It was quite a mob of dogs and me. My little one jumped up on a bag behind me. My giant Great Dane, say by my side. Molly, my original St. Bernard came in and lay down, and would not moved. Beauregarrd, who look like he is a coyote mix, also glued himself to em. My husband had to extricate dogs for two minutes, before he could get to me.

(((((((((((((Canders))))))))))))))))))

Love,

Jane

Hey, I remember when I was 3 there was a big tornado that went through my town. My parents left me in the basement to take pictures of the tornado, I was scared because they left me and so I ran upstairs to be with them. There at the very end of our street was the tornado. They were super mad at me yelling at me to go back to the basement. I would not go because I would rather have been with my parents and in danger then alone & scared. I had nightmares for a very long time after that.

My fiance lost his house in that very same tornado (he was 3 as well). He wasn't scared during it but would not come out of the basement afterwards (because his house was gone and was afraid if he came out, he'd get sucked up too).

After awhile it became fun, we had our storm kit with flash lights, candles, can of soup, candy bars, & weather radio. we would "campout" in our basement. I always had my most important stuffy ready to bring down with me (which were my stuffed animals & blankets). As I got older the stuff has changed to pictures & my computer.

I used to be terrified of them, but now I find them exciting & know what to do even if there isn't a basement, such as taking a matress and putting it over your bathtub. I am now 24... sometimes it can be a bit scary, but I really don't worry too much.

I've never experinced an earthquake & I think that would be terrifying, so maybe it's just what we're used to?

I'm not sure if that answered your question or not!

Hi Dark Eyes and Spazz Kat,

Thanks for your notes.

We are living on 18 beautiful, rolling acres in rural Kansas currently. A third of the property is covered with lovely cedar trees, and there are two ponds. Our house is old, small, and has no basement. Fortunately we do have two huge interior closets.

After our unusually cold winter, we were enjoying our first beautiful warm day yesterday. It was sunny and in the 70's.

All of this to say our house is small enough that our big closets get filled up with a bunch of stuff, when it is not tornado season. I just didn't expect it to start on Feb. 28th.

After spending 13 years in Florida before moving here, this is such a rude awakening. I have been here going on 10 years, but probably don't sound that way.

Thanks everybody for listening, caring and writing,

EJ

Last night our sirens went off at 1:30 and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Woke me up and caused to me panic all night. I finally took some benadryl and was able to get a couple of hours of sleep. I hate spring time here. It was about this time last year that a tornado went through the town next to me and Rex was out in it. I was scared for him until I knew he was at his dad's safe and sound.

Hi Janniebug,

I'm glad you can hear sirens where you are, and you were safe last night.

We are so far out in the country, that there aren't any sirens.
