I have downloaded the latest version of Java chat but I have had no luck connecting to the chat room. Anybody have any expertise in puters? I went to my Internet Explorer web browser but have not figured out how to enable Java. Any Tech help would be appreciated!!!

I haven't been a part of the chat room troubleshooting here so i don't know all the ins and outs of what has been working and what hasn't.

Making sure Java is enabled and working is the best first step to try though...

If you are using Windows (I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6... if you are different the steps might be a little different but should be similar)

In IE go to the Tools menu and choose Internet Options

On the Security tab, click the custom level button. Scroll down to "Microsoft VM" ("Java Permissions") and make sure that disable jave is NOT selected. (my system is set to "high" and my chat works properly).

Close that box and then go to the Advanced tab. Again scroll down to "Microsoft VM" and there are three checkboxes. The first two ("Java Console" and "Java Logging") don't matter (those are for programmers writing Java applications).

The third one is JIT Compliler for Virtual Machine. If that is checked, try unchecking it. The Microsoft website says that sometimes an incompatibility between the Java on a particular web page and the Microsoft JIT compiler makes Java programs not work properly, and they suggest trying to turn it off and retry the page in question. After you change the JIT setting you will have to close internet explorer and restart it. Then go back to the page (chat in this case) and see if it works. If it does it is an incompatibility between JIT and the chat Java.

The MS page doesn't say anything about what to do if shutting off JIT solves the problem, but I guess you can just leave JIT off as long as everything is working.

Sorry I don't know enough about how Java runs in IE but this is a place to start. I will see if I can find any other info on the web about it.

for the record my system has JIT enabled and I don't have problems with chat but that doesn't mean it can't be effecting your situation. Crazy computers Enabling Java ??.

miss p i found some more info Enabling Java ??

If you downloaded and installed the Sun Microsystems java there is a way to switch between using the Microsoft version Java and the Sun version Java. I'm assuming you have the 1.4 version as what you just downloaded. (My version is older and I don't have the same controls here... i don't want to change and risk "breaking" what is currently working for me Enabling Java ??)

According to the Sun webpage there are two places to look (and they recommend looking at both places to be sure).

First, in Tools=>Internet Options where we were before, again on the Advanced tab, scroll down and see if you have a separate entry for "Java (Sun)". To switch between which Java plugin you are using, check or uncheck the boxes next to "Use Java 2 v 1.4x for applet (requires restart)" and next to "Microsoft VM". Since you are currently unable to connect to the chatroom I'd say just change whichever setting you have now to the other to see if that works.

You will have to close Internet Explorer and then restart it to complete the change

You should also check the Java control panel. Open up the Control Panel in Windows and look for the Java Control Panel or Java Plug-in. Double click on it to open it. Check the Browser tab and there should be checkboxes with all the browsers that you have installed (might only be Internet Explorer). Change the checkbox next to the browser you are using (IE) to enable or disable the Sun version Java for that browser. If in the IE "Tools" options you turned the Sun Java on, make sure the setting matches in the Java Control panel (i.e. that it is checked next to Internet Explorer. If you turned off the Sun java in IE and turned on Microsoft Java, then make sure the checkbox in the control panel is UNchecked.

Again you will have to close and restart the browser for this to take effect.

Hopefully one of these ideas will get you back into chat!
