I wonder would you like a robot friend if it was possible (which it will be one day)
A friend programmed with a personality, to keep you company. As someone who was socially phobic and very lonely for years I would have liked it. Computers programmed with personalities have been tested to see if they can keep astronauts company. It works surprisingly well. Robot buddy to keep Japan astronaut company I bestie that never flakes on you, runs you down behind you back or gets bored of you. Sounds good to me. Being social, happy, smiley, smiley plus the inevitable small talk is so exhausting. |

Marmaduke, i would have to answer that no. I am a realist and do not believe in the elevation of artificial intelligence to be equal or greater than humans. To me humans are very special and i like to keep it that way. blessings

Oh.
To me humans are not that special. I am a realist and reality is that all species are of vital importance to the health of the Planet. Humans are so destructive! No other species is so greedy. Robots are so much nicer. I mean logical. I like logical. The workers were more likely to say that the robots 'better understood them' and 'improved the efficiency of the team,' the researchers found. Ever had a boss who had favorites? Or who stole your ideas? Was jealous? Who seemed to picked on you for no particular reason? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...ine-human.html Last edited by marmaduke; Jan 16, 2016 at 07:51 AM. |

Humans program that AI to,learn from its experiences...sorry but robots would be no different in the long run than the people who programmed them. ROBOTS ARE NOT A SPECIES...they are machine. Way back in the 1970's when I was getting my degree in computer science, AI was one of the fields of interest I dabbled in for a short time but chose not to get involved.
I'm sure you are dreaming of having your own Short Circuit robot....that is NOT REALITY....always remember a computer of any kind is no better than the human that programs it

No....computers can't do things better than humans they can just do them faster. Computers are only as smart as the programmers who program them. Even the learning ability in AI. Is programmed by humans....the problem comes when we allow machines to make decisions there are some things that require more than logic to make a WISE decision & that would be where computers would fail miserably.
Yep many sci fi movies & books have been written about this concept. Programmers are getting more creative all the time as hardware gets better...like the artificial limbs that are controlled my microprocessors..it is amazing what computer hardware is capable of being programmed to do.....but it still ALL comes down to the programmers ability & the design process

Yes you have a good point it all depends on the programmer.
The robot would have to be programmed by a nice person! My point is I suppose that (assuming the programmer) is 'normal' robots would not have emotion. They wouldn't get jealous etc. They could be programmed to be your best friend. I actually believe it won't be long before robot friends are avaliable. They are here already. One of my best friends now? My computer. And what about those children's toys? Ya know the ones that can be connected to your PC. Furbies. I've had good conservations with a furby (sad I know) Not that big a step to make a furby for adults. I want one. I think one day robots will be a species (if humans survive that long they are so destructive) Like Data on Star Trek. I think having a robot friend would be nice.
I agree with a lot that's been said about humans being better than robots, however I feel something is avoided. If we are to say robots are no better than the person who programmed them, then we humans are no better than the forces or deities that creates us. My logic dictates that if a God or a creator made humans, and humans make robots, then it would be no different from a supreme creator making the robot. These aren't exactly my views but a condensed part of them. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

Artificial Intelligence is still in its very early stages and there's a lot of technological impediments that prevent it from advancing (data storage, for example).
So any robot these days still depends on human input in order to operate (which is dodgy enough), but one day machines will become as dangerous as the human beings who created them. And because of that, I don't think that robots are the way to go. I see robots in the future as "helpers", and nothing else. They could one day clean your house and cook your food, but better be careful they don't burn down your place or poison your soup instead. There should be measures in place to prevent robots from doing anything else but the stuff they were programmed to. Even as helpers, I wouldn't even put them in the same category as dogs, for example. Dogs are naturally caring creatures; robots could in theory be programmed to be "caring", but that would as the word says, "programmed". |

I'd love an AI friend! It's not like I would replace people with her. But it would be nice and fun.

I am an atheist.
If God created man he could have done a better job. Humans ain't nice. If you believe in God and we create robots it must be what God wants right? Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

Surely an AI friend would be great for a socially isolated person.
Maybe that person could pratice social skills with the AI. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

Not getting into a religious discussion here....but NO, not everything man creats comes from God or is what God wants...that all has to do with free will & good & evil that exists in this world...a discussion for a PM or social group where allowed

No computers do things their programmers could never do....being programmed to be able to do something does not mean the programmer himself can do it
I mean that's a fact

Orva better example...a computer based model could potentially search other planets that would kill a human ect
They might make good buddies you never know lol

I don't believe in free will. Free will is an illusion. Humans are programmed from birth much like a computer. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

There were lots of things in my past I believed but have since learned those beliefs we're wrong...just because we believe something doesn't make it so....you THINK free will is an illusion no PROOF that it is any more than I can prove to you that it isn't. That difference in belief will continue to exist....just the way it is & the different way we look at things are based on those differences...just the way it is also

Well. Where is free will exactly.
You do not chose to be born, you cannot chose your parents or your genes. You have no say in your childhood environment. You are born with personality just like you are born with brown or blue eyes. Your early influences will help shape your attitudes. I found I've had very little real choice in my life. People are programed by genes and environment. I used to believe in free will once. Not any more. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

That's your choice to believe what you want to believe....that in itself is free will, no one forced you to have that belief or not.
But that topic is ![]()

I was just doing a quick search on robotics just to see how advanced it really is at the moment, and it turns out my knowledge on the subject was (admittedly) a bit outdated.
Robots that will clean your house are already available, also there are robot kits that allow you to build a rather rudimentary robotic device and program it yourself. And maybe sooner than you think, you might get your wish coming true: there is this company that specializes in building companion robots. There might be even more companies out there building robots for the general public, if you search for them. Things are more advanced than I thought. |

There is a robot 'pet cat' avaliable for the elderly. People who are too frail to care for real cat but want company.
I think it's a real good idea. http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/futu...11364017335022 Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

i already have a malevolent AI in my head, so it'd be neat to have a nice one in the physical world ! and i always wanted one of those silly robot dogs from the late 90s-early 00s !
