biiv said: have you read up anything on having squirrels as pets rhap? i would be worried about him not being as tame when he grows up?

Yeah - I have been reading a lot about keeping squirrels as a pet and I joined an online squirrel forum - you would be surprised to how many people actually have a regular squirrel (not a flying squirrel) as a pet and some of them are five or more years old and they are still just as cuddly and sweet as ever. I also have been reading up on how to create a good release day - just in case that day comes that Max is no longer tame or seems happier out in the wild than with me.... I will be sad for sure IF he does leave, but I will also be very happy and thrilled for him and the journey he will take up in the trees so high. >> I have been taking tons of PICS from the beginning to the end just in case he does decide to leave one day << |

I raider 2 baby lovebirds recently, I can tell u this it was a joy and a pleasure to do it, it gives u untold amounts of joy to be able to raise a baby animal by hand, plus it gives u the wonderful memories as well. I really hope that your new babies grow up to be nice and strong little critters.

Max has turned 9 weeks old today and I do believe it is official...
Max will become my families next PET - - due to all the issues he has been having with his left paw. I have a large cage that should arrive at my house tomorrow per FedEx and we will build Max a nest box and a super large cage for outside (around a few trees) - so that he may feel the wind on his nose and the warming fresh sun on his little face. The PICS are of Max when we first found him and his sister @ 3 weeks old (R.I.P - Little Miss Mia) and of Max now - @ 9 weeks old. ![]() ![]() |

Isn't it interesting how quickly they change their look from first born to looking like a smaller version of squirrel at 9 weeks....kinda like my american eskimo puppies....look like grubs when they are born & then into little fur balls by 8 weeks.
You said there was something going on with Max's left paw.....what is going on with it? It's a good thing is didn't have to survive in the wild if that's the case. I'm sure he won't even think about being a free squirrel when he has your home & care. Thanks for sharing this whole experience....I love following your stories, Debbie

eskielover said: You said there was something going on with Max's left paw.....what is going on with it?

Max wasn't able to use his left arm / paw back on 09/19/07 (it seemed to be paralyzed) and now it appears to have been something other than an injury..... for the exact same thing happened to his sister Mia two weeks later, but worse and with in 24 hours she passed away (and) now Max has lost some fur and two of the toe nails on the left paw - he needs his nails to climb with if he was to be released back to the wild. Mia's problems started in her left paw just like it did with Max... then hers went to her back right foot and by night time the entire body - the left foot in connection with the opposite rear right foot is a neurological medical problem of the brain, therefore, I am thinking that mommy squirrel knew something we did not know and that it was her that tossed them out of the nest the day we heard the commotion before they fell. |

Isn't amazing how nature knows those kind of things about their babies....instince or something tells them that the babies wouldn't be able to survive in nature before the problem even shows up in reality. I know this happens all the time out in the wild....it just amazes me how they can sense these things.
I do hope that Max's problem doesn't worsen. That is where we humans differ from nature....we believe in fixing problems if we can (sometimes even our advancements can't) rather than just casting the problems asside. I think we (humans) have definitely evolved throughout the years & with better science to back up our abilities to cure problems. I remember even in my lifetime when the thought process was similar to that of Momma squirrel. I am so happy that Max is doing ok so far......he is just the cutest little guy....winning the hearts of us all, Debbie

His paw has healed as far as the fur goes and he is using it again....... and from talking to other squirrel owners on a squirrel forum, the nail loss can be normal with the type of problem he has had with that paw.
I think (feel) as though all is going well for Max - again. |

Max has turned 10 weeks old today....... two more weeks and he will be an Adult Squirrel.
The last PIC is of Max sitting / sleeping in his favorite spot - on the computer chair.... and do not worry I am not wearing the glove because Max is to hard to handle or mean, but rather I am wearing the glove on my left hand to give it time to heal from the past few weeks of playing with Max - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I just had to share this story......
Tonight after my husband got home from work he changed into some loose sport shorts and a T-shirt to be comfortable for the night..... Well, Max loves my husband just about as much as he love me, therefore, he kept going back and forth to our bedroom to see what my husband was up to - during this time I kept on hearing my husband tell Max No (but evidently Max was not listening). And before I knew it my husband was coming into the living where I was sitting at the computer reading TSB and he had this big grin on his face and he said "Please Get Your Squirrel Out of My Pants" - I was confused at first and then I felt this big lump right on the crack of his butt - well you know where my mind went and I couldn't help but think of one thing - Now as hard as I tried I could not get Max to come out and he was getting feisty with me for trying..... so I just stretched open the top of my husband shorts and out pop a little squirrel head and the look on his face was saying "Aw Mom I was Having Fun" Then I said to my husband who was still laughing his head off - guess Max was looking for some NUTS. Thank YOU Max - for giving us a well needed laugh tonight. *hugs* *kiss* |
