I used to be a great speaker, never had problems with tongue twisters or pronouncing words etc, but lately I sort of stutter. I will be talking and on a word that would normally be easy to say gets all jumbled up and comes out in a mess of syllables.
Also the tip-of-the-tongue feeling on other words that may be related..

Any ideas on what could cause this and how to fix it? I constantly read books but I don't really talk as much as I used to. Could it just be the fact that i'm not "working" my brain/tongue, or is it something more?

I think it's more than being out of practice. It could be anxiety. You haven't done this and inside you aren't yet comfortable with doing it now? It could be a medicine you are on. It could be age. It could be someone more important that needs to be checked out. If you try various remedies and the problem doesn't improve, or worsens, I would suggest you then schedule an appointment with your MD. Just my POV.

Are you stumbling over any kind of word, or maybe just larger ones, or bigger concept words? Are you using new words instead of old familiar ones? Try thinking of the first syllable only, and then allowing the rest of the word to come.

Perhaps you are rather excited to share, and your mind is going faster than your tongue Symptom Question Try breathing slower, and try reducing the urgency to tell others what you will share. Speak more slowly over all, and even if a word fails to show up, it won't be so obvious and you won't stress out so much about it.

Good wishes!

Are you on any meds? They can cause "confusion" or slowness coming up with the correct word/pronounciation. If you aren't on meds I'd still go to the doctor and get a checkup, make sure there aren't any physical problems. There's a bit of use-it-or-lose-it but usually not for years? I think the "suddenness" of this change sounds like it might be a physical/hormone/chemical thing. Have you changed your eating habits, drinking more/less, different or more stress, etc.?

Even Reading aloud I have the same problem with stumbling on words, though thats usually because its hard for me to focus on words ahead of where I am, its like a tunnel vision I get I can really only focus on 2-3 words so if I don't pre-read it, I don't pause when I should etc, or say a word I am not reading..

I am currently on no medications(though I am going to see a doctor now that I FINALLY got insurance.

It actually started about a year ago, a bit after I started feeling sluggish and began forgetting things I have done, or that I need to do(but I assume that is just part of depression).

Also no change in diet, activity, though the past 2 years I have had a lot more stress than I used to.

Ok this doesn't sound very good to me Symptom Question When did you have your last physical, and when did you last have an eye exam?

I'm sorry you put it under depression, and yes, that does occur, but not when you can almost pinpoint when it began, imo. Did your stress and depression begin after a certain event that this could be attributed to? If not, I would be sure to give all that info when you see the doctor. I'm thinking doctor will order some tests. I hope it is "just" what you say, though.
