Really neat site about Prosopagnosia :-) also known as face blindness. Some people can't recognize other people, even their best friends or themselves in a mirror! Great tests to see how you do compared with others:

http://www.faceblind.org/facetests/index.php

In the first "Recognition" set of 3 tests, in the face test I only scoring in the 28th percentile but scored in the 55th percentile for objects and somewhere inbetween both those for names.

Thanks for posting this site Perna...what a hoot! It was fun and I'm happy to say that I would recognize someone and remember a name more times than not...not bad for an old lady Face blindness

faceinating......I lost 4 out of the familiar faces, & 8 out of the unfamiliar....I was very low...only 16 percentile....guess I wouldn't be a very good police person or someone who had to recognize a criminal.

Obects, I did much better....missed 5 out of the familiar & strangly, only didn't recognize that 1 was unfamiliar...55 percentile there

verbal, I did much better....it's more like pattern recognition to me & missed only 2 out of the 12 sets....65 percentile.

My memory recogninzed words & letters better than objects.

Thanks for sharing....this was very interesting test...something very different.

That was interesting. I scored above average on face recognition. My lowest score was on name recognition. No surprise there.

very interesting, we thought it was our whole visual memory that was impaired, but our visual memory for the objects was spot on, it only seems to be the faces Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness

we didn't score as badly as we feared, but badly enough to be sure we are not good with new faces Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness

we actually have quite a funny story about this. When we first joined a very large committee, we took notes on ppls' appearances coz we knew we had a problem with recognizing ppl & attaching the names to the faces. BUt when we got home, nearly all the descriptions read exactly the same Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness except some of them were men & some were women Face blindness The descriptions of their glasses frames & the womens' rings were much better, but ppl buy NEW glasses, lololol, & they don't wear the rings to cat shows, lololol.

Face blindness Face blindness AND we don't have a problem remembering the animals faces & names Face blindness Face blindness only the PEOPLE !!!!! Face blindness Face blindness Face blindness

we would like to keep discussing this, coz it seems fairly weird Face blindness

does anyone have any thoughts on how to improve this ? it can be very embarrassing & inconvenient, especially in a business setting Face blindness

maybe we could get one of those mobile phones that takes photos & label them Face blindness Face blindness

Zorah, it may not be something you can make better. You may actually have "face blindness". A writer I like, Heather Sellers, wrote a "memoir" about it including a lot of scientific stuff, Face First. But she's the one I got to looking at the test from. She doesn't recognize herself or other people but she's not DID or anything, she has an inherited medical problem.

poooh, we only score 16th percentile on the facial recognition & 86th percentile on the others

& on the other two facial recognition tests we scored just above the borderline for acknowledged difficulties.

we think we only scored that well on the facial recognition coz we have learned tricks to do it over the years Face blindness Face blindness

we'll have to research this further, lolol.

fascinating Perna Face blindness could it be a symptom of Aspergers Syndrome (not that we have a dx of Aspergers) ? but then why don't we have any trouble recognizing animals faces ? Face blindness maybe a PTSD thing ? given that our specialization is in consciousness & memory we find this fascinating !!!!!!!! (btw, that isn't necessarily in HUMAN consciousness & memory, lol, a more general field)

Ah ha Zorah you have a similar trouble to me there, good mentioning the films, I too wonder if a person is one I've seen before, because I tend to recognise ppl by their clothing so if they appear in another scene wearing different clothes I tend not to recognise them unless they are noticeable otherwise eg a hair style/ colour which stands out or some other instantly recognisable attribute...
