contribute it to Hurricane Ike.....The nation's only refineries are located in Texas...and if they cant refine oil.....supply is limited....therefore price goes up because the demand is still there
if we can convice all these frippin liberals to build more refineries and drill more oil here in the U.S., we wouldnt be in this situation |

Alright now, I'm as liberal as they get, but I'm not apposed to building more refineries or even drilling. So just leave the liberal word out of it.
Think one of the reasons why we don't have more refineries is because that would cut into the oil companies profits. They would have to spend money on building them. And then they wouldn't have the record high gas prices to make a profit on. So they have no reason to build refineries. They want to keep the money their making. I really excepted that the price would go up due to the hurricane, it normally does. But I've never seen it go up over a dollar in one night, .30 or .50 cents is what normally happens during a hurricane.

The thing that pisses me off, is that the minute there's a threat to supply - gas prices jump immediately. But when the price of oil drops, as it was until this latest spick gas prices don't drop by an equivalent amount. The Gas companies claim it's because the Gas is made from Oil bought 6 months previously so it takes awhile for the price reduction in oil to trickle down. This is a load of crap. If it were true, we'd see delays in increases when the price of oil goes up. I'm convinced it's simply price gouging on the part of the gas companies.
And gas is even more expensive in Canada - it went up overnight by over 10 cents a liter. So it's now 1.36 / liter making it about 5.44 a gallon. It's ridiculous. --splitimage |

I'd just like to remind everyone here that PsychCentral is not the place to discuss political issues, as it goes against the Community Guidelines.
But beyond that... gas prices are crazy. ![]()

I learned why we're called the Hilltoppers my first semester at Western. Learned the hard way that you make your classes all on the top of the hill or the bottom. I have amazing calf muscles thanks to the Hill.
That parkway is mind numbing.

You are partly right here B but there is another side to the equation as well. If this society had been dedicated for the last 25 years to energy efficiency, we would already have affordable long range electric cars and Hydrogen cars, gas not being the only possibility at that point would be dead cheap.

Gas is more expensive lots of other developed places in the world and the United States uses more than its "share". A lot of our prices are high because of all the state taxes on them; that's why the differences state-to-state. We don't need more refineries and they need to be close to where the oil is to be most cost effective! It's Mother Nature's doing that a hurricane is there, not some political party's. It will go back down to a dull roar when the hurricane is over and things get cleaned up.

I won't put my two cents as to the why of it, but regarding the quick increase: our town has two gas stations (it was big news when we got the second one--now we have more gas stations than stop lights!) and I was running on empty yesterday. I came to the first one and saw $4.39 and could not believe it. Thank goodness I wanted a fountain dietCoke because that's the only thing that made me go up to the second one (their prices are usually within 1 penny of each other). I got there and there were lines at every pump and gas was "only" $3.75. Of course the guy currently at the pump was filling his vehicle (dual gas tanks) and three gas cans, then the guy in front of me couldn't figure out how to operate the pump (as I'm hoping I don't run out of gas sitting there). Anyway, just as he starts pumping the attendent walked out to the sign with her little number-changer and right then increased it to $4.45!!! Of course I couldn't leave because 1) I have NO gas and 2) we're packed like sardines in there. I know they have to change the prices sometime, but not while I'm sitting in line!! Uber frustrating!! I do know as high as prices seem, the US actually has some of the lowest prices in the world!
