I got a call the friday before labor day from my case worker at SS that I was pre-approved for disability. She said they had something they were working on and I should be getting my checks soon. She called this morning and stated the the judge has ordered that I have to have a payee. I'm not to worried about my payee being my husband, guess lucky I'm married and luckier that we have a good relationship.I'm just wondering if having to have a payee will cause any other things, like decision making? Does this just cover money or does it cover anything else?

Anyone who has a payee, can you give me more information? Feeling confused right now.

My understanding is that the payee is just a formality. I'm on SSDI, when it was approved, they told me to bring in someone who would be my payee also. What they told me is that I needed to have someone who could access my money in case I could not...for example...if I were to be inpatient and my rent needed to be paid. My partner is my payee and my checks are directly deposited into our joint account. Other than the fact that her name is on the account, and on a couple spots in my SSDI file, she has nothing to do with my SSDI.

my mother was my payee.......she wouldn't give me, my money, wouldn't use it ofr herself, just forced me, to save all of it, went on to demand my $800 tax return too, overpaid my rent to my dad, and i went to every social service agency trying to get her off, she would then call them and convince them for her to remain, my payee, my doctor wouldnt sign the slip for me to get my own money, because, you guessed it, he didn't want to piss off my mother..lawyers wouldn't help, I reported misuse to the disability, they did nothing, my psychiatrist finally pointed out to my mother this was a touch on the unhealthy side, she finally relented, but once you get a payee, you always have to have a payee, now an agency gets my money and gives it to me, although, they charge a fee for this, one I cannot, afford..................to remember this, I am crying now Out of my many trips to social security, they said yes, the payee system causes many families hatred towards each other and the destruction of them, yet "It was set up with the best of intentions...." I can see perhaps someone who cannot physically write out their checks for bills, but there was nothing in my history that showed I needed a payee, and I have no idea, why I was assigned one, let alone my cold hearted mother of all people..

I am so sorry to take readers down this road I posted when it was happening and not one person could help, me...

Well be blessed, you have a husband, the path of being single, is a treacherous, one.............

My dad is my payee. Even though sometimes I hate it and rebel and we argue I know that for now it is the best thing for me. We are working on a budget for me and working on me sticking to my budget. So far I'm not doing so hot on that so dad has to stay my payee. The main time I hate it is when I go to cash a check at the bank in his town they don't know their head from a hole in the ground and try to tell me I can't cash it without his permission and I have to explain it to them that yes I can cash it and I get frustrated and try to stay calm. It isn't happening as much now though because its a small branch of the bank and they are getting used to seeing me as I only cash a check once a week. I am given my money once a week and I am to figure out what I need for the week money wise and if I blow it all the first day then it's my fault and I have to figure out what I'm going to do. That is teaching me to budget my money. So far it's ok. I'm trying to keep a dollar in my wallet every week.

I have heard some horror stories about people and their payee's but have heard some positive one's too.

Its base upon your GAF score .You need to be around a 35 to get ssd or ssi for mental illness most people are 80-100 so 35 means you function well take care of you self or work without possing a danger to yourself or others .If you drop below a 30 thats when things get weird thats when you need a payee and someone to take of your affairs . Below a 20 and you need 24 hour supervission ,also if you have kids anything below a 50 you can have your kids taken away or you could be removed from your house if there a other parent there to take care of them ,that happen to me i was removed and drop off at a bus stop and "Bam" was homeless. So well its nice to get a check each month in the mail it comes with a price .You become marked for life (Black listed).

It may be based on the GAF score, I really don't know one way or the other if it is or not. However, do know that my GAF score was 65 when I applied and I was approved for SSDI in 4 q/2 months, with no denial...for mental illness. Also, late last year, I got forms indicating it was time to review my case. My psychologist was asked to answer a couple questions on the form and one of them was GAF score. She put 76. Two weeks later I got a letter saying there was no need to review my case...SSDI continues.
