A lovely ballad by Tom Waits: Grapefruit Moon...

Grapefruit moon, one star shining,
shining down on me.
Heard that tune, and now I'm pining,
honey, can't you see?
'Cause every time I hear that melody,
well, something breaks inside,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining,
can't turn back the tide.

Never had no destination, could not get across.
You became my inspiration, oh but what a cost.
'Cause every time I hear that melody,
well, something breaks inside,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining,
is more than I can hide.

Now I'm smoking cigarettes
and I strive for purity,
And I slip just like the stars into obscurity.
'Cause every time I hear that melody,
well, puts me up a tree,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining,
is all that I can see.

How could you ignore this one???

The Raindrop Song (lyricist unknown)
----------------------------

If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops
oh what a rain that would be!
I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide [open your mouth wide here AHHHH] Favorite song lyrics
That's the weather for me, oh baby
I wouldn't care if the sun would never shine
I'd keep a wishin' for raindrops all the time
If all the rain drops were lemon drops and gum drops
Oh what a rain that would be!

And another Emmy favorite - best sung on schoolbuses on the way to some skanky camp:

Grandma's In The Cellar
-----------------------------------

Grandma's in the cellar, lordy can't you smell her

Cookin' biscuits in that dern old dirty stove ("dirty stove!")

From her eye there is a matter that keeps drippin' in the batter!

As she whistles as the [snot-filled snort noise here] comes down her nose

Down her nose, down her nose

And she whistles as the [snot-filled snort noise here] comes down her nose

Yee ha!

My all-time favorite lyrics and a huge influence on my poems: "Subterranean Homesick Blues" by Bob Dylan

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

Bob is a huge favourite of mine........saw him in Sept with Willie Nelson.......they were doing a duet and both forgot the lyrics..they recovered only to do it again. pretty soon they were both laughing so hard that they couldn't sing.....it was an awesome concert.

from a post in the depression forum, i felt it was more appropriate here..

Alone Again (Naturally)
Oh in a little while from now
if I'm not feeling anyless sour
I promise myself to treat myself
and visit a nearby tower
and climbing to the top
will throw myself off
in an effort to make it clear
to whoever what it's like when you're shattered
left standing in the lurch at a church
where people saying 'my god
that's tough she's stood him up
no point in us remainig
we may as well go home'
as I did on my own
alone again naturally.
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerrful
bright and gay
looking forward to well who wouldn't do
the role I was about to play
but as if to knock me down
reality came around
and without so much
as a mere touch
cut me into little pieces
leaving me to doubt talk about
god in his mercy who if
he really does exist
why did he desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed
alone again naturally.
It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can't be mended
left unattended what do we do what do we do
alone again naturally.
Now looking back over the years
and whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
never wishing to hide the tears
and at sixty-five years old
my mother
God rest her soul
couldn't understand why
the only man she had ever loved had been taken
leaving her to start with a heart
so badly broken despite
encouragemant from me no words were ever spoken
and when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
alone again naturally.

you reminded me of that song. heard it a few weeks ago on the xm radio..that stuff rocks

This kept me sane during my divorce and when at the same time, my family allowed me to be homeless even though they had plenty of room for me.

RASCAL FLATTS LYRICS

"I'm Moving On"

I've dealt with my ghosts and I've faced all my demons
Finally content with a past I regret
I've found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I'm at peace with myself
I've been burdened with blame, trapped in the past for too long
I'm movin' on

I've lived in this place and I know all the faces
Each one is different but they're always the same
They mean me no harm but it's time that I face it
They'll never allow me to change
But I never dreamed home would end up where I don't belong
I'm movin' on

I'm movin' on
At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there's no guarantees, but I'm not alone
There comes a time in everyone's life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone

I sold what I could and packed what I couldn't
Stopped to fill up on my way out of town
I've loved like I should but lived like I shouldn't
I had to lose everything to find out
Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road
I'm movin' on

I'm movin' on
I'm movin' on

This is another one of my favorites. I will find the things and person(s) that make my soul sing if it takes a thousand years.

I also have great joy hearing the Cherokee tongue being sung/spoken.

I Will FInd You
(Theme from 'The Last of the Mohicans')
Clannad

Hope is your survival
A captive path I lead

No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a long long time
No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a thousand years

(mohican)
Nachgochema
Anetaha
Anachemowagan

No matter where you go
I will find you
In the place with no frontiers
No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a thousand years

(cherokee)
Hale wú yu ga I sv
Do na dio sv i
Wi ja lo sv
Ha le wú yu
Do na dlo sv

No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a long long time
No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a thousand years

No matter where you go
I will find you
In the place with no frontiers
No matter where you go
I will find you
If it takes a thousand years

No matter where you go
I will find you

Ok, here's one more. I hope this doesn't trigger anyone, but this is my heritage and this song makes me fiercely proud of it.

A Country Boy Can Survive

Hank Williams Jr.

The preacher man says its the end of time
and the Mississippi River she's a going dry.
The interest is up and the stock markets down
and you only get mugged if you go downtown.
I live back in the woods you see,
my woman, and the kids and the dogs and me.
I got a shotgun and a rifle and a four wheel drive
and a countryboy can survive. Country folks can survive.

I can plow a field all day long,
I can catch catfish from dusk til dawn.
Make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
aint to many things these boys can't do.
We grow good old tomatoes and homemade wine
and countryboy can survive, country folk can survive.

Because you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run,
cause we're them ole boys raised on shotguns.
We say grace and we say mam
amd if you aint into that we don't give a damn.
We came from the West Virginia coal mine's
and the Rocky Mountains and the Western skies
and we can skin a buck, we can run a trout line
and a countryboy can survive, country folks can survive.

I had a good friend in New York City
he never called me by my name just hillbilly.
My Grandpa taught me how to live off the land
and his taught him to be a business man
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway Nights
and i would send him some homemade wine
but he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife,
for forty three dollars my friend lost his life.
I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
and shoot him with my ole forty-five
cause a countryboy can survive, country folks can survive.

'Cause you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run,
and we're them ole boys raised on shotgun.
We say grace, we say mam,
if you aint into that we don't give a damn.
We're from North California and South Alabam'
and little towns all around this land.
We can skin a buck, and run a trout line
and a countryboy can survive,
country folks can survive,
countryboy can survive,
country folks can survive.

Just curious, what language is this song?
I have a fairly new friend I do not get to see often, she came from Macedonia, and was wondering if this is a language related to that part of the world.
If not it would still be "cool" Favorite song lyrics to learn of it's origin.
Thanks so much,

DE

one of my favorite "relationship" songs is..."it matters to me" by faith hill. it's the one that everyone requests that i sing in kareoke...i think because i SO feel that song, ya know?

Baby, tell me where'd you ever learn
to fight without saying a word?
then waltz back into my life
like it's all gonna be alright.
don't you know how much it hurts?

when we don't talk. when we don't touch.
when it doesn't feel like we're even in love.
it matters to me.
when i don't know what to say. don't know what to do.
don't know if it really even matters to you.
how can i make you see...it matters to me?

baby, i still don't understand
the distance between a woman and a man.
so tell me how far it is.
how you can love like this
cause i'm not sure i can.

when we don't talk. when we don't touch.
when it doesn't feel like we're even in love.
it matters to me.
when i don't know what to say. don't know what to do.
don't know if it really even matters to you.
how can i make you see...it matters to me?

it matters to me!

"Bleed Black" AFI

I am exploring the inside, I find it desolate
I do implore these confines, now, as they penetrate, "recreate me"
I'm hovering throughout time, I crumble in these days
I crumble, I cannot, I cannot find reflection in these days

If you listen, Listen, listen
Listen close Beat by beat
You can hear when the heart stops, I saved the pieces
When it broke, And ground them all to dust

I am destroyed by the inside, I Disassociate
I hope to destroy the outside, it will alleviate and elevate me
Like water flowing into lungs, I'm flowing through these days
As morphine tears through deadened veins, I'm numbing in these days
SO...

If you Listen, listen, listen
Listen close, beat by beat
You can hear when the heart stops, I saved the pieces
When it broke and ground them all to dust

I know what died that night, it can never be brought back to life
Once again, I know

This is one of my favorite songs, it just fits how and what my life is like.

A Country Boy Can Survive

My brother and I sing that song EVERY SUMMER around a firepit...(usually top-of-our lungs drunk)

We decided that it's our family anthem LOL

Excitable Boy
Written By Warren Zevon & LeRoy P. Marinell
c. 1976 Zevon Music/BMI and Polite Music/ASCAP

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said

He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark
Excitable boy, they all said
And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom
Excitable boy, they all said
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy
After ten long years they let him out of the home
Excitable boy, they all said
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

Blackened Waters by Black Label Society

nd here i stand
i find myself alone again
the miles ive walked
loss of hope and loss of friends
yet i keep on running
and i wont look back
the waters rise
you never know just where they're at
the waters turn
yeah, yeah
the hardships we endure
yeah, yeah
you ain't the only son
or forgotten daughter
we have drowned in blackened waters

the sun has set
the endless stream where nothing lasts
forever damned
today, tomorrow, and all the past
yet i keep on running
and i wont look back
the waters rise
you never know just where they're at
the waters turn
yeah, yeah
the hardships we endure
yeah, yeah
you ain't the only son
or forgotten daughter
we have drowned in blackened waters

the waters turn
yeah yeah
the hardships we endure
yeah, yeah
you ain't the only son
or forgotten daughter
we are drowned

Also by them, Dead Meadow

All alone at last
Years roll by so fast
Twisted and insane
The house you built
No longer the same

Once you're there
Once you're there
You can't come back
Nothing lives
Nothing grows
Inside the dead meadow

Months keep rolling by
Live another day, then you die
ghosts inside your head
we choose our paths
when all is done and said

Once you're there
Once you're there
You can't come back
Nothing lives
Nothing grows
Inside the dead meadow

Lastly, High Hopes by Pink Floyd

beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
our troughts strayed constandly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begin

Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the cut

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The night of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfuried
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Eneumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many time

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river

Forever and ever

Another one I forgot. It's a simple song with not very many lyrics, but I think it describes how some people think in regards to socialization

So ya
Thought ya
Might like to go to the show
To feel the warm thrill of confusion
That space cadet glow
Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you'd like to find out what's behind these cold eyes?
You'll just have to claw your way through this
Disguise

The bold part is how I feel about how people perceive me. I don't think people understand some of the things I say and where I'm coming from. That's a huge drawback when you're away from home and trying to make friends.
