Anyone try any of these for anxiety/depression or ocd symptoms? And what is the Major difference between the 3?? My pdoc said i could try to add sam-e or 5htp at a low dose but said there wasn't strong evidence they work well..

I am not sure about these but there are some posts on Psych Central that might be of interest
Psych Central - Search results for Sam-e vs 5htp or L-Tryptophan for anxiety

Thank you, was wondering though if anyone had any success with any of these out of desperation.. for depress/anxiety. And if they were on any med to compare it to- I read you have to be careful when trying any of these with med.

I wanted to keep taking Sam-e years ago but I just couldn't afford it. These supplements are so expensive.

L-Tryptophan is an amino acid, found in almost all proteins.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is produced during metabolism of L-Tryptophan.

SAM-E (S-adenosyl methionine) is produced from metabolism of L-Methionine, another amino acid, also found in almost all proteins.

In my opinion, people whose diet includes an adequate intake of protein are not likely to be deficient in any of them so, unless there is medical advice which indicates otherwise, taking them as supplements is unlikely to be of much benefit.

To get the best benefit from supplement treatment you want to hook up with a good orthomolecular physiatrist or do a test like neurotransmitter test.

Cuz check it out when it comes to same e it's good for people who are "under methylated" but if your "over methylated" it would make you worse.

5htp is good if your low in serotonin but you could also be low in GABA and there's supplements for that also like taurine and l theanine. All supplement treatment takes time and it doesn't have immediate action.

I just started Sam- E along with a high dose vitamin regime for my mental issues; mostly add, anxiety and paranoid symptoms. Since I just went off wellbutrin and have had withdrawals I can't say for sure how it's working but I do notice a difference in my ability to function and less anxiety. I also take 50mg 5htp twice a day and that is helping as well.
After a couple months I'll update to let you know how it's going..it is expensive but I just ake one capsule of sam e a day

Thanks Natalie,

Congratulations! I've noticed at least some people in this forum who have had a big success with Sam-E. Here's one

Let us know how it goes!

Beware, even natural antidepressants such as SAM-e or 5-htp can switch one into mania. Ask a doctor before embarking.
