Valerian root is natural and not addictive. Certainly it's better f you can use natural remedies but it wouldn't be as potent as Meds. Talk to your doc about it first

I would say that Valerian has a milder effect on me than Xanax--but for me that is good; I am more functional than if I take a Xanax. Both for me are sedating, however; but with Valerian, I can take one capsule and feel better without feeling as though I am going to fall down asleep. However from what I understand Valerian can interact with other medications, even though it is a plant: plants are made up of chemicals every bit as much as pills in a bottle. So you're going to want to talk to your doctor first. If you don't want to do that, you can ask a pharmacist to look up the interactions with any other meds you are taking.

There is quite a lot of good information about Valerian on the web.

I don't actually know much about Xanax; I have only taken it a few times. But I have taken Valerian to help me go to sleep and then more recently to help me with anxiety. I have heard that Xanax can be habit-forming. Valerian is probably much less likely to be. I wouldn't have been able to drive on a Xanax or work--although I think people do work on Xanax, but all drugs with a sedating effect hit me pretty hard. You might want to ask your doctor about both Xanax and Valerian; to weigh the pros and cons of each and when you can take one or the other for either anxiety or sleep. I wish you the best.

It works fairly well for me (think of ultra low dose ativan type effect), but sometimes I'd swear it causes mild temporary headaches (not every time for some reason) so I don't use it often.

Honestly, if you already know that you need to be calm during certain hours and in a certain situation--then you need to address that set of circumstances. If you absolutely feel you need to take something--I'd take a valerian capsule--half or less of the recommended dose.

But if what you are experiencing is anxiety that is related to school--then exposure and talk therapy might be a better approach to overcoming the anxiety. I am not a medical professional; just someone with personal experience with anxiety and working to overcome it.

Not Valerian, but Natrol's Kava Kava works well for me. I take 4 capsules about 3 hours after lunch.

Takes effect within one hour of consumption.
Provides a "heady" feeling of calmness

Take on an empty stomach, don't overdose (causes nausea).
Thanks for this!

Valerian root has much milder effects than Xanax. In my experience, anyway.

I've used Valerian at night. Has helped a little.

If you have access, consider cannabis products that are high in the compound called CBD, and low in THC. Many people find this calming, and the low THC means little or no psychoactive effect (no "high"). Can be good quick acting solution.

Also simple Magnesium supplementation can be huge for some people.

The amino acid L-Theanine is another to consider.

From my reading, Benzos are supremely dangerous. Especially if taken regularly and long term, they can induce changes in the brain, lead to dependency, and for some the withdrawal syndrome is a nightmare. I consider Benzos to be last resort, emergency only.

As for talk therapy, I'd consider that also last resort. Meditation, learning to breathe correctly, natural remedies, addressing medical issues would be far better IMO.

I'm quite sure my daughter is using cannabis to self medicate for anxiety. My father and my ex did the same thing. Do you think cannabis products are safe for people who self medicate?

No, Ambien is a muscle relaxant and sedative. Sonata is also a sedative for sleep problems.

Benzos are specifically for anxiety symptoms (i.e. anxiolytics). Examples are:
- Xanax (Alprazolam)
- Klonopin (Clonazepam)
- Ativan (Lorazepam)
- Valium (Diazepam)
Thanks for this!

Yes, I read about the tea before buying Natrol. Supposedly, the tea works well for a lot of people. The dosage on mine is 200mg per capsule.

Kava Kava 200 MG (30 Capsules) by Natrol at the Vitamin Shoppe

Thank you! I will check the dosage on my tea. I think I'm going to need to drink some this afternoon.

Oh, I forgot to mention ... the 200 mg capsules contain only 60mg of kavalactones (active ingredient). So, the true dosage is 60mg.

Leomama - Just curious ... where on the West Coast are you (roughly) ... are you, by chance, anywhere near the state that had (and is still experiencing) 3,800 wildfires in 2016 ?

Cool. About the same.

Another drug that has worked well for me is Securus, which is a blend of herbs:

Hard to say. I'm no expert. Lot is happening/changing with cannabis research and development. Products made from strains high in CBD and low in THC don't typically get people high, so in that case it's not like someone would be abusing it just to get high. The effects are purely medicinal. I think the cannabis plant is potentially a godsend for many many things, and compared to dangerous synthetic meds, it starts looking very good.

Another thing to consider is quality. Gotta investigate the source in order to avoid pesticides, mold, other contaminants, and to avoid unpredictable levels of potency.

Some info here:
Medical marijuana for anxiety? ? Here?s why - Smell the Truth

I've used the product mentioned. Can just spray under the tongue.
Thanks for this!
