my T and I were discussing this yesterday. We had the symptoms from the DSM-IV available. He couldn't decide, though other docs and T's have already diagnosed Borderline. My T now has decided I have Personality Disorder NOS. Sounds like a buffett of all sorts of things.

Anyone else have this??

Buffet, yes. I think that diagnoses do not always match reality!

Most individuals with personality disorders lead pretty normal lives and often only seek psychotherapeutic treatment during times of increased stress or social demands. Most people can relate to some or all of the personality traits listed; the difference is that it does not affect most people's daily functioning to the same degree it might someone diagnosed with one of these disorders.

Diagnoses are tricky because sometimes they become a lable. What they should be is a guideline to help the healing process. I have been diagnosed with Borderline and with PTSD. Using those diagnosis have have been able to see in text how to help myself. Does that make sense? I am still Borderline and still have PTSD but would I still be diagnosed as such if I went to a new therapist today? No. In fact my last therapist felt my first therapist was wrong in the diagnosis. Which made me angry because she was discounting all the effort I put in to my healing.

ANYWAY, the point I want to make is "Is the new diagnosis helpful in finding a framework for healing?" If not then one should remember that we all display symptoms from all personality disorders. Borderline or Schizoid? It is merely being human. I maintain my belief in my BPD diagnosis because it continues to give me a framework to follow even though my last therapist would not diagnose me with it at all but rather would say I only have tendencies toward it.

Does any of this make sense?

No, the new diagnosis doesn't make sense. He said I have borderline and schizoid traits. I have documents pages long from a neuropsychiatrist who says I have borderline as well as other T's and Pdocs. No, I don't want to be borderline, but I don't like the NOS factor either.

> I don't like the NOS factor...

That just means they don't know how to categorize you!

DSM Code -- 301.9

Personality Disorder NOS is reserved for disorders that do not fit into the other personality disorder categories. People with features of more than one personality disorder but without the complete criteria of any one disorder can be assigned this disorder. Examples also include passive-aggressive personality disorder, depressive personality disorder, and people that display a particular trait such as sadism or masochism are assigned this disorder.

If it doesn't make sense don't take the lable on. File it back so if something comes up you can refer to it but don't take it on. We know ourselves better then anybody else. We may not always understand what is going on but we are the only ones inside our bodies. Work on the things that make sense and fit. Let the other stuff go. If your new T is right, as you get a handle on the stuff you know, his insights may come into focus. If he is wrong, you have let it go so it will not hold you back working on something that isn't wrong.
