for a long time up until now i am terrified of ghosts....i cannot stand ghosts...the idea to me is so scary..the movie Sixth Sense still gives me nightmares....i do believe in them....i just never understood why i am soo terrified

also lately i had an unrecognizable flashback of some sort...i dont know what it was....anyway...scared the crap outta me too....

so perhaps....i am so terrified of ghosts because its unknown...you cant seem them but you know they are there....same with a bad memory...you know its there but you dont remember it...you dont see it....maybe in a way to handle the fear of the unknown from when i was a child my brain tried to put a handle on a situation and stuck the fear to something else.....ghosts.....

i dont know...maybe im just crazy as always and not saying anything of much worth....

No, that makes a lot of sense! One can easily represent/remind about the other. I don't like any "horror"-type movies or shows either. I don't like the surprise or suspense; the knowing something is wrong/going to happen and feeling helpless about it. I don't like feeling helpless.

((((Perna))))

and its not just Ghosts....I was beside myself when i saw the movie The Ring....I was so terrified and upset I could feel her beside me at all times....I recently also realized that deep down she represents me .....with the long brown hair ...as a child...how her mother hated her...how everyone thought she was evil...how she was evil (sometimes i feel evil) and how no one loved her....and she was tormented and thats how i felt....it hit so close to home i never even thought about the connection until a few days ago and why she bothered me so much

Those movies scare the crap out of me too ... so I stay completely away from them. Don't torture yourself by watching horror movies ... find a comedy to get lost in i never put two and two together

The last scary movie I watched was Poltergiest. A scene right at the start where the tree branch grabs the kid was right out of my childhood nightmares (Mama wasn't into curtains), and brought back all kind of memories that I'd of sooner left forgotten. Maybe people who have lived horror don't need the Hollywood version.

The last scary movie I watched was the zodiac. Well, noone told me that this zodiac killer was still around. So Im watching the movie, not too scared because Im assuming the guy is in jail. Then at the end of the movie it says "the zodiac killer is still at large" and I looked at my boyfriend and said "go around the house and turn all the lights on" lol. i think its pretty common to be scared of the unknown. Like whoever said - I can't handle watching the movie The Hills Have Eyes. Once I got to the scene where theyre ****** a girl and walks over to the baby I had to stop because I was crying. But a lot of people who never live through that stuff love horror movies.

Well, I make horror movies and while these films serve a purpose, none of you are my target audience. I'd honestly prefer you never see my films. Anyone feeling vulnerable should avoid them.

But I can speak to why normal people like them. Part of our psychology is to rehearse real life situations. It's why "play" is an important part of life. The role of stories is to allow us to go through someone else's experience so we can learn various lessons and process a variety of emotional responses. In the case of horror or suspense, it's a way to confront the various aspects of mortal danger and the fear of the unknown.

Why I enjoy writing/making horror is because it's an outlet for all the terrible things I've experienced (or at the very least, imagined). It lets the demons out, so to speak.

So don't watch horror movies if you're not up to it.

But I love 'em.

I used to read horror novels all the time - no Steven King, but like mini-horror; John Saul. Mystery horror thriller stuff. Oh and Dean Kuntz, too. Then at some point, it all got too much. I couldn't read any or watch any movies like that. I feared them becoming real, and my flashbacks were horror enough and getting worse. Now i mostly read kid books; harry potter, the golden compass... I just started a book on Einstein, lol. The math in there is scary enough for me.

CyranO is right, ppl like us shouldn't watch scary movies.

But it can be very hard to know which movies will trigger you.
We haven't been triggered by a movie since "Rider on the Rain" & before that "The Virgin Spring".

It sounds to us like you have substituted the fear of ghosts to replace a traumatic memory.
Comedys are far safer to watch, but some of them can be triggering too.

Sorry, Inny, maybe not useful.
