Lately, it seems that more and more memories are coming up. Upsetting memories of the mess that was my childhood at home, as well as bullying stuff at school. I'm finding myself getting all numb/dissociated or overwhelmed with sadness.

I've been writing a lot of this out at my blog, but the flood just keeps on coming, along with intrusive, upsetting dreams.

Any idea of how to slow it all down? I'm not feeling very functional. =(

Are you in therapy?

Yes. I'm in therapy. Seems like all hell is breaking loose emotionally for me between sessions.

I wonder if you're getting into too much big stuff in sessions, or more than you can cope with? Sometimes it can help to have a session or two that focuses on building up your internal/external resources.

The time when everything is coming up and it feels like too much to deal with--it's hard. But it will pass, eventually. Hang in there.

See, that's the odd thing. I have been, despite my acknowledgment that therapy is the safe place to let stuff out, tightly holding on to emotions. I talk about stuff, but am utterly stuck in releasing fear, hurt, etc., without going all dissociative. The big overload processing is happening in between sessions. I think I need to be a little more direct in letting T know that I need better facility in handling what's happening outside of the room.

I think you have the right idea making your T aware of how much you are struggling in between sessions. I just went through a time of being flooded with these kind of things, my T allowed me some extra sessions to help me through it.

Bird, maybe don't journal? Work on building positive things into your life outside of sessions? Leave all the issues, etc. at her office and don't process between sessions? Definitely talk to your T about this.....

when things threaten to overwhelm me i do a thing my t taught me - you count 12 things you can see and say the colour and take a deep breath each time you say it - so

1 (take a breath - TAB) say what you see and it's colour

that 1 TAB - Blue bear
then 2 TAB- green plant

you do this up to twqelve its supposed to get the thinking part of your brain back in charge or the emotional one - take care P7
Thanks for this!
