So I just spent about 3 weeks in the hospital because I was suicidal, adn then attempted suicide. The inpatient psychiatrists plan was for me to work with my regular psychiatrist to try MAOI's since I have taken pretty much everything else with no success. Now, I am on no depression meds, my psychiatrist refuses to let me try any MAOI's due to dietary restrictions and stuff (all of which I know about and am willing to deal with at this point).

I am SO frustrated at this point. My psychiatrist just wants to keep trying me on meds I have been on already, even though they don't work.

Now what?

can you get a referral to another psychiatrist that may listen to you more?

That sounds really frustrating. MAOIs are rarely prescribed and your psychiatrist may not have enough experience with them to adequately monitor you. Also, with your recent suicide attempt he may not want you on such a dangerous med (dangerous if you don't follow the diet to the letter). You might ask him or her for a referral to someone else.

I read somewhere recently that sometimes psychiatric meds that don't work for a person at one point can work for the same person at another time. I don't remember the web address of the source but it was some medical journal. Just thought I'd throw that in here.

so sorry about your hospital visit... hope your recovery is going well.

i went on maoi's more out of curiosity than anything, as i am kind of willing to try anything.. i found a doctor who would prescribe it, which was actually not that hard to do. the meds were mildly helpful. not amazing, just a boost not unlike a good cup of coffee or a cocktail ...

the side effects however.... whew! that's another story

i hope you can find a doctor who is able to meet your needs...
feel free pm me if you have q's...

Are there any other anti-depressant classes you haven't yet tried? SSRI's really didn't help me, I'm on Wellbutrin and quite happy with the results

I'ver tried pretty much everything except MAOI's. I saw my psychiatrist again yesterday, and for some reason he is willing to let me try an MAOI now (I swear he's got multiple personalitites or something...).

I am working on getting an appointment at the Mayo Clinic her in MN at this point. It's only about a two hour drive, so I'm hoping I can get in there since they are supposed to be among the best....

The danger of the food interactions is not so high as the drug is absorbed through your skin. This might be a less dangerous way for you to take a MAOI. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my pdoc. So, I told him where he could go and exactly where he could stick it (lol) and went to my regular doc who has agreed to prescribe my psych meds until I find another pdoc. Maybe that is an option for you? As long as you have the documentation from the impatient pdoc stating what your needs were. Your regular doc may know more about the diatary issues as well and could have a way to help you out in that department.
