I have tried numerous sleeping medications and none of them work properly. I either don't sleep at all or I sleep too much. The latest sleep medication I was given left me hung over and stoned.

Does anyone know of any good sleeping medications that my doctor could prescribe for me? My body works slowly and it usually takes 2 hours before I feel the affects of the medications. So I take my night medications at 8 pm.

There are many to choose from and unfortunately they work differently for different people. Restoril, Trazodone, Ambien, Ambien xr, Lunesta, Seroquel, Seroquel xr. That's what I can think of off the top of my head.
Thanks for this!

I have been on so many sleep meds I probably couldn't name all of them. It would probably be easier for you to say what you have taken first before I could name others I've tried...I've tried some real heavy ones. You sound like you have a similar problem to me. Nothing ends up working. One thing I had some luck with was Halcion. If you want more names let me know. Hugs

Hey Zen,

All my life I have had every sleeping medication you can think of and even had them mix them together nothing worked until Lunesta BUT wait before you say it doesn't work because it didn't work for me either they raised it to 2 mg from 1 mg and I had freaky dreams at first but rubbed off but then the doctor raised it to 3 mg since. The deal with Lunesta is you have to take it like 10 min. before going to bed. I took it like an hour before bed and it didn't even make me tired but when I took it right before sleep or If I woke up in middle of the night and took it, it put right to sleep and I didn't have any drugged feeling the next morning. Hey, it's worth another try if you aren't sleeping. There aren't too much funky side effects and that's nice.
Hey can you let us all know what helped when you find something that works for your sleeping???
I am so sorry your not sleeping, it makes everything tougher deal with, ya know.

Rozerem worked well for me and it is not addictive. However my insurance did not cover it and a month's supply cost >$100 so I cannot afford it.

I take benzos (3mg of xanax) and it does the job, except pdoc doesn't like this for the long-term. So he's adding depakote back to the mix (fat pills) and weaning me off xanax. People build up a tolerance for benzos and they are habit forming.

The goal of course would be to find the med that does the trick that has the lowest risk of long-term side effects.

my pnp won't prescribe lunesta because she says it can be addictive? I don't agree and wish I could try it because I've tried everything else with either no luck or too many side effects. It's so aggravating!

The latest one I tried was rozerem, it doesn't give me a whole night's sleep but if I take it along with an OTC unisom I can get a few hours uninterrupted at least. But now my pnp didn't refill the rozerem so I'm w/o any sleep meds right now until I see her on Fri and it SUCKS!

Depending on where you live, Mogadon (nitrazepam) is by far the best sleep med I have ever used, but it's not available in the US. I've had insomnia on and off for over 20 years. Valium is a second good choice too, but not as good as Mogadon. Good luck

I am taking .5-2mg of lorazapam for sleep. It takes 45 mins for it to have it strongest effects so I usually want to be in bed ready to sleep at that point. But also know that a lot of the reason I can't sleep is because of anxiety. Good luck on finding something to help you sleep.

My sister was on Ambien for some time and it was no longer effective. She was switched to Buspar and she loves it. The great thing is that she does not wake up tired.

Buspar does nothing for me. I think its purpose is to work as a long term agent that keeps the risk of developing anxiety symptoms down. It doesn't have the immediate effect that benzos do. But benzos are bad to get hooked on. They are a controlled substance in the US. And if you run out from taking more than the prescribed amount, you could be in a bad situation having to deal with withdrawal.

I take Ambien CR, I sleep like a log and wake up pretty refreshed without feeling drugged and drousy the next day. I'm on 12.5 mg nightly.

Lunesta is the only thing that has worked well for me. Make sure you take it at least 3 hours (preferably more) after you eat! Your body doesn't absorb the drug well if you have a high fat meal or a lot of food before taking the drug.

Have you ever tried melatonin for sleep? Its a natural sleep aid you can buy over the counter. I had been having difficulty sleeping when I was taking lexapro at night, someone here suggested melatonin and it worked even better for me than ambien!I couldnt believe it. I did feel slightly hung over the next day if I didnt allow for enough sleep by taking it early, but even that wore off quickly. It might be worht a try.

I know 2 people who use melatonin because they found it to be helpful. Just make sure you take it early enough so you don't feel sluggish the next day.

Thanks for the tips on the melatonin, I'll have to look into that. I wish I could get off these Ambiens.

Zen,

Seroquel is the most natural feeling med I've tried for sleep. I use it once in a while and I only need 6.15 mg (chop up 25 mg tabs). I had bad experiences with Ambien, Lunesta, and Rozerem. For occasional mild sleep problems, Xanax XR works well. I also take some xanax during the day prn for anxiety. I've never built up a tolerance to it.

I AGREE! I feel drowsy in the morning if I take it too late. But that does go away as the morning goes on. But for sure, this is the downside of melatonin. I love it, though. I like that it is a nuatural choice plus helps me sleep really well.

Dear Zen ~ farmergirl gave you a good list of meds. I will just add this. With Lunesta, at least, if you take it with meals or just after a meal, the effect will be long delayed. Didn't know that til I finally broke down and read the enclosed pharmacy information! billieJ
