I used Vicodin for a kidney stone a few years ago. Took the pain away but I felt like I was floating a few inches off the ground.

vicodin (hydrocodone) is an excellent med for pain relief and very commonly prescribed.

don't take it if you're allergic or sensitive to condiene though...they say. however, codiene makes me very sick to tummy and the vicodin doesn't.

call dr. i hope you get some relief ((((((((((pat)))))))))))

Vicodin helped with the pain I had when I had strep. It made me very queasy though. So I spent most of the time I took it sleeping. But it did help!

Hi. I suffer from chronic pain and have been prescribed just about everything. I have had quite a bit of success with Methadone. It is a great pain killer and keeps you pain manageable for a longer period of time. It is also used as a means to stave off the pain in the first place. AND it's cheap..for those who do not have RX coverage..it's a Godsend. I have been on it since 1999. Still works. That is my experience. Darvocet is only for mild pain and its pain killing action is so short-lived.

Good luck.

I'm not sure what type the cause of your pain is, but Darvocet is a very mild narcotic pain reliever. Some pharmacists say its not much better than taking plain Tylenol. (Half of Darvocet contains the same active ingredient as Tylenol.) I am guessing that the doctor may prescribe Vicodin for you. There are various strengths. If you are allergic to codeine, then there is a chance of being allergic to hydrocodone--the narcotic in Vicodin. BTW, I am allergic to codeine, but not to Vicodin. Methadone is NOT given out but for use with chronic, severe pain.

I never had any luck at all w/either Vicodin or Loratabs (combinations of hydrocodone & Tylenol/acetaminaphen in varying strengths). They just don't work. Percocet (oxycontin) makes me sick to my stomach in a horrible painful way.

Darvocet works for me - but I have to take it before I start hurting. Right now, I've got Ultracet, which is tramadol & Tylenol & it works whether I take it before I start hurting or afterwards & without the sensory narcotic-type side effects of Darvocet (ya know, when it just feels really really good to rub your nose?). (I've got nerve damage, bad knees & scoliosis, so I occasionally end up w/pain killers when it gets really bad)

I've noticed that a lot of pain killers are ineffective unless I take them before I start hurting, or they take awhile to kick in. The only narcotic-type pain killer that's ever worked quickly & during pain was codeine. As far as a fast-acting, non-narcotic, actually effective pain killer was Aleve (naproxy sodium). I bought it accidentally one time thinking I was buying ibuprofen (Wal-Green's generic ibuprofen & generic Aleve's have very similar packaging & very similar 'name brands'). I decided to try it, (even though I've heard a lot of bad things about that type of pain killer) & it worked - fast!!! And at the minimum recommended dose, too!!! I've discovered that if I take the Aleve at the onset of pain (or when I wake up hurting) & then take the Ultracet, the Ultracet kicks in before the Aleve wears off.

Aleve doesn't do jack for me. My doctor always prescribes Naproxen (generic prescription strength Aleve) and it doesn't work on me at all. Plus, if he weren't an idiot, he would know I shouldn't be taking it along with the Effexor. But he won't give me anything else....nice to know now that it causes heart problems and strokes too!

The only pain med I have found that works for me is the fentynal duragesic patches. They are put on every 72 hours giving off the medication throughout the time. I have never had any breakthrough pain & even though I am on a huge amount (200ug/hr) I am capable of riding my horses, driving a car without being all over the road. My previous pain specialist refused to prescribe the amount that worked but the pain specialist I have now says that with my record of no pain & being able to have my "quality of life back", he has proof enough for the DEA to not go after him for perscribing this amount for me.

I have been of every pain med that exists & none have worked except for a 200mg shot of demoral that only laster for about 8 hours of relief. Being that my problem is migraines (or just one huge migraine). They started with the normal migraine meds (the imetrex family) which only messed with my heart to the point that was really scarry. Then came ultram, vicodine, vicodine ES, morphine (which I am allergic to), a nasal spray pain med (can't remember the name right now....really strange halucinations...little people flying around the room, methadone, demoral pills, darvocet, percoset, & all the other pain meds, & narcotics that are possible.

I swear by the fentynal patches.....I don't have to take any pills & it is a constant pain relief without any feelings of pain coming & going. I am sure it depends on what type of pain you have.....I know that the Dr finally perscribed the patches for my Mother when she was dying of cancer (it was kinda scarry that her dose was less than mine).

It took years of trial & failure to finally find what works. I never want to loose this pain specialist even if they say that they would forward my records to a new Dr when I move....but that still doesn't guarentee that a new Dr would be brave enough to think my information would be strong enough against a DEA questioning like this one does. Pain is a really tough issue & it is different for each person. I usually had a very high pain tollerance level, but when the migraines hit.....I had no tollerance at all.

I hope you can find a med & dose that works for you....it is important to not loose your quality of life because of pain...& an outstanding Dr will be willing to work with you until it is found.
I can really feel for you having gone through similar frustrations,
Debbie

Duragesic patches are usually prescribed for severe pain. The patch is placed on the body and absorbed by the body all over--it is not a "local" pain patch. It is in the "C2" category which requires a careful prescription. If your doctor first prescribed Darvocet, I am really not sure s/he would jump to something on the order of a C2 narcotic. I still think your doctor would consider Vicodin/LorTab/Norco. (All name-brands/strengths of a great pain reliever--hydrocodone with acetaminophen.) Some people are sensitive to the narcotic effects (feeling spacey, etc), even at the lower strengths, but some just find pain relief and/or drowsiness. If you have a sensitive stomach, take with food. Always be careful when you take doses. You may want to write down the date & time when you take the medication to help you remember.

Inky,

You are correct....it was stadol...really strange effects from it. It must go directly to the brain with the immediate reaction I had......it did provide some relief for awhile.....only was too temprorary to help.

Yes, the patch is C2 narcotic (a very controlled substance)....not a localized pain patch.....narcotic goes into the system & deadens the pain sensing. I don't know that it really takes away my migraines, only releives the pain. You do have to be already used to narcotics before being given the higher does....they usually start out lower to see if you are too sensitive. I had already been on so many different narcotics that they just started me off high....then when that level didn't work, doubling it finally worked.

It is usually a last resort for sure....& it is best to start with lower level pain meds before jumping into anything stronger. There is no point in taking really strong pain meds unless you gradually need to increase it so that you finally get relief....it is best to work up to the point of relief.

I think they do have localized pain patches...seems like my previous psychologist used one with his lower back pain before he had surgery.

A good pain specialist it worth their weight in gold from my experience.....they know exactly how to progress it the treatment of pain.

Good luck,
Debbie
