I'm a recovering drug addict and my pdoc refuses to put me on any medication such as Xanax or Klonipons because she says they are habit forming especially for a recovering addict. I have extreme anxiety and can't even work before of it, I even draw a check partly due to my anxiety. If it's true that I can't take Xanax or medications of the same effect due to my addiction, do you guys know of any other medication prescribed for anxiety and nervousness that isn't in the same medical category as Xanax, Valium, etc, etc? I'd really like to know so I can suggest to my pdoc these medications. I'm so tired of being so anxious and nervous all the time. Not sure if this goes here? Help with meds?

Some of the anti-psychotics help with anxiety. Seroquel works for this. Also some of the AD have anti-anxiety effects.

The herb kava kava? The amino acid taurine? Magnesium orotate?

These all have some anxiolytic properties, but everyone varies on how strong the effect is.

Are these herbs pill form or liquid?

Kismet, I'm on Seroquel... 900mg, been on it for over a year at different dosages. It's never helped with my anxiety. I've heard it helps some, though.

sometimes this place upsets me.....losing posts as you send them. arrrgh

Kava kava is usually a capsule, but I have seen liquid forms. Misuse can cause liver problems. Taurine is available anywhere weightlifters go to buy their protein powders and such. Magnesium orotate (or glycinate, or taurinate) are calming, but watch the dose, or you get loose bowels. The internet has a zillion places to get these. Iherb is a good company.

Thanks for the info, Larry. I'll check them out and see which one is fitting for me, if any at all are. Gotta find something that helps.

You might also ask about SSRI's. But as for herbs, be very careful about them. They're not regulated by the FDA, and vitamins, herbs and other "natural remedies and treatments" aren't always safe. They might react negatively with something else you're taking, or you could be allergic, or whatever. Just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's safe.

Very true, Maven. Never been big on herbs myself, but if it'd work, I'd try it I suppose.

Right now here's the medications I'm on: Lithium, Abilify, Provigil, Seroquel, Chlorpromaz (can anyone give me information about this drug?), and just started back on my Wellbutrin XL.

The beta blocker propranolol was given to me to help with the physical symptoms of anxiety. Knowing that my body wasn't freaking out caused me to be less anxious.

I had no idea you were taking all these other drugs. My bad for not asking.

If you're not big on herbs, then don't bother with the kava. The risk of interaction is too great, anyway.

The taurine and magnesium would be safe to try. They're in food. Just not usually as concentrated as in this purified form.
