Has anyone else found it absolutely impossible to sleep since the first day they started their meds. It's frustrating because the medications make me feel 90% better but make it so I can't fall asleep. Has sleep troubles caused anyone else to consider not taking their medications anymore?

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Every drug that ever positively affected my mood also caused insomnia, with one exception. St. John's wort improved both my mood and my sleep. But *that* only happened the first time I used SJW. After that, it also gave me insomnia.
Insomnia is the absolute bane of my existence. If I only could get good sleep, all the time, I would be doing so very much better. In another thread, when I spoke of being unable to tolerate meds past eight or ten weeks, it was insomnia that sealed the deal for me. If I can't sleep, a med is poison to me, no matter what else it does for my benefit. Lar |

I have horrible insomnia as well...no matter how tired I am. The only way I can get some decent sleep is with a sleep med, and I don't want to get dependent on them. Part of mine is hormonal as well.
For me, Wellbutrin is the worst sleep-stealer. Depakote has a mildly sedating effect. Zoloft seems to neither help no hinder sleep. Speaking of which, I need to get a nap before work.

Yes. I had to stop both Prozac and Wellbutrin because of sleep problems.
I couldn't even tell if I was getting a positive effect because I was so sleep deprived, tearful, and irritable. Lexapro has worked out really well for me. I don't sleep any worse than I do when not on meds, and it combats depression and any accompanying anxiety.

Well, it is 11:00 at nite and I'm still going. When I took Zoloft--didn't sleep more than 4 hours. Now, I just started Geodon, no sleep...Lamictal, when I take what I should be taking....no sleep.....

I can't fall asleep until 4-5am, every night. Any sedatives or sleep pills (especially Ambien) make me groggy and unable to think straight the next day. I've always been extremely prone to day time fatigue. I'm on Lamictal and Adderall (just switched to XR). I take 200mg Lamictal (down from 300mg) & 20-40mg of Adderall (down from 60mg in the fall). I can take the Adderall early and still get no sleep. Now I can't concentrate because I can't sleep, and I can't sleep because I take a med to concentrate. And when I don't take any meds I still can't fall asleep very well, nor can I concentrate. Frustrating, to say the least. Jess |

It is very frustrating to find medications that keep you stable and at the same time, cause you to have insomnia. From reading these posts and doing some thinking, I have come to the conclusion that that is the way it is going to be. If I am going to take medication to help me feel better, I am going to have to take medication to help me sleep. I've been battling with my conscious thinking, "I feel so guilty having to take a sleeping pill every day". However, when you think about it, I should feel guilty that I take other pills to control my bipolar evey day too. I'm just going to go with the flow. Either take all my meds or none at all. I'm going to tell my conscious to be quit for now.

very simple...just take either ambien or xanax every other night
doesn't cause dependency and gets you most of what you need |

With Lexapro, I had to FORCE myself NOT to sleep - I was constantly exhausted for the first two months. I eventually got used to it and had no other side effects.
I'm on Wellbutrin now and the only sleep impact it's had is that I have very vivid dreams. It's rather annoying - I'd like a peaceful night of sleep. I'm sleeping the whole night through, but the dreams are very active and sometimes violent - not quite nightmares since I usually "win", but certainly not relaxing.
