Have you ever just stopped taking your meds? I'm tempted to see what will happen if I do, since the docs and ts say absolutely not to.

Stopping any med cold turkey is never a good idea. It is NOT the way to see how you would feel without medication. You will suffer withdrawal and a flood of symptoms since your body is used to functioning with the medication.

If you want to see how things would be without medication or with a lesser dose, decrease 10% every month to 6 weeks. Some people consider the real recovery from their illness to have happened after withdrawing from medication, and others swear by their medication. It is a personal thing, but you have to be smart about it and be ready for possible withdrawal and have other ways to cope with any symptoms.

Sure I quit cold turkey many times--the withdrawals were horrible and it landed me in the hospital several times. If you want off your meds it might be a good idea to taper them or maybe try different meds--everybody is different though.....D.

I went cold turkey on my antidepressants, nasty side effects but got through it and feel better for it. Went cold turkey on my antipsychotics and relapsed badly and ended up in hospital.

If your dr isn't advising it I would consider their opinion.

I had to come off SSRI's before I could go on SSNRI medication.

As Martha Stewart would say, "It was a bad thing."

Then I forgot to take my SSNRI just one day. Only one day.

It was like I was having a stroke. I was immensely sick. I was vomiting, couldn't walk, shaking, slurred speech ... I was in bad shape. Had my mother-in-law not guilted my wife into taking her to her doctor's appt, my wife would probably have taken me to the emergency room even though I didn't think I needed to go.

I did once, 2 years ago... the beginning was fine, good, in fact! A bit too good, manic... this went on for a few weeks. When I crashed it wasn't pretty, though I tried to push though off meds. I was a mess. I kept trying for about 4 more months. Finally I couldn't take it anymore, I saw my old phychiatrist and BOOM!!! Hospital...
I don't exactly love meds, but they make things easier

OP - Are you tempted to quit just because the docs say not to? If so, why?

I went off my 600mg thorazine cold turkey

and I got stuck in a delusion that the government owed me 100 million dollars

it was fixed with a Haldol shot

pretty much cold turkey, but because I am pregnant and couldn't keep them down. I don't know what was withdrawal and what was morning sickness, but it was awful. It's been almost 2 months and i think I need them back

Never stop you meds without proper consultation and supervision.

I went cold turkey once, had to dash to the other side of the country to be with a dying relative, forgot to pack meds. For 3 days my family had two of us in hospital
that was the only time I've ever be hospitalised

Gradual withdrawal was almost as horrible, it took about 9 months to be off everything. I have never felt so ill in my life. There were times i thought I was dying and was quite prepared to complete the job myself but thankfully i was being quite closely monitored and it was slowed down at times, smaller drops in doses and longer at each dose to try and help.

but yeah from my experience
NEVER STOP YOUR MEDS WITHOUT PROPER CONSULTATION AND SUPERVISION!!

I recently have. I was taking Zoloft and ran out and decided not to refill.... not a good idea. Every feeling I had on the zoloft is just magnified. I also experienced mild withdrawal and couldn't eat for 3 days.

I've been off medication and therapy for 3 months because I lost my insurance. Not that I've found the right cocktail yet but it's def better than feeling like this. Also withdrawl from Klonopin was the worse thing I've ever experienced.

Agree, about the dangers already posted here about coming off meds cold-turkey.

Hmmm, I highlighted something here. The docs and t's say not to do this.
You are tempted to see what will happen.

I used to be a little rebellious when I was younger, and someone telling me what I should or shouldn't do, still, to this day, gets under my skin.

What types of topics are you, currently addressing in therapy? If you don't mind sharing...

There's something that can be addressed in CBT. Automatic responses can be resolved.

Sounds like risky behavior. I saw your About Me, profile; Um, is this part of the Self Injury aspect?

Yep, sure did. Got tasered 3 times. Took more than 13 people to strap me down. Obviously ended up in the hospital. I'm calm cool and collective for the most part off my meds, until someone says something triggering, then it's all down hill from there.
