Hi guys, so 3 weeks ago I saw the psychiatrist & was prescribed oxazepam 30mg for panic/anxiety after minimal success with diazepam. I wasn't really given a choice of medication, he just suggested oxazepam so I said ok you know, nothing to lose everything to gain sort of thing. I've used it 3-4 times now and felt NOTHING. It doesn't help my anxiety or panic at all. We tried anti depressants for anxiety a while back but they just make me manic. As far as I know my only other option Benzo wise would be alprazolam but I don't think my psychiatrist would prescribe it as it's pretty heavily regulated here (Australia , schedule 8 substance of addiction/abuse). We also tried Neulactil for panic/paranoia but I had horrible side effects with little to no benefit.
Is there any other alternatives out there that could be suggested that might help me that will work? I'd give Valium another go but I'd probably need at least 10mgs at a time because 2.5-5 barely touched the sides. TIA guys ![]()

In terms of panic, quick acting drugs such as Ativan (lorazepam), Xanax (alprazolam) or Klonopin (clonazepam). For more general anxiety, benzodiazepines there are a bunch of medications of that class that can be used for anxiety. Xanax, Klonopin, Librium... The more fast acting ones are more appropriate for panic, as benzos that act slower may only start kicking in once the panic has passed.
I recommend sublingual versions, as they act much faster, a plus for their use in controlling a panic attack. A long term option that isn't an antidepressant are antipsychotics Seroquel, usually the XR version. It was approved for that use.

Thanks TicTacGo, at my last appointment he mentioned there was another drug he was willing to prescribe but it's not covered under the PBS (I've narrowed it down to Klonopin) & it's not as expensive as I thought so I'll ask him about that. As for the faster acting meds I might ask about lorazepam (you only get prescribed alprazolam here mainly as a last resort, or if you've got a doctor who's willing to give it out, not many are).
I was on Seroquel XR in the mornings but got little to nothing from it aside from the fact it made me extremely lazy. I take normal seroquel at night which helps me sleep & calms me down nice & good but it isn't an option for me to take it in the day, they tried that in hospital for me as a PRN & I was basically a zombie

You're welcome. Klonopin worked quite well for me when I used to use it, so did Ativan SL. However, I would stick with whatever works for you.
with regards to Seroquel XR, I also can't take it in the morning, or too late at night because I feel groggy from it too.

Just a quick update, went back to the psychiatrist today & I asked to go on either Klonopin or Valium again. He wasn't willing to prescribe Klonopin but advised I can take 1 and a half - 2 valiums a day if required. Thanks for your help
