So over Seroquel and Klonolpin. I have tried to get off them but haven't managed to do it. I want and need to get some kind of grip on my weight. I was diagnosed with diabetes after I went on Seroquel.

I was on a weight loss plan before these medications and lost a substantial amount. Although I am not back where I started I am headed back in that direction. Is it possible to drop some kind of weight if I went back to doing something?

Yes, it absolutely is possible to lose weight while on seroquel, it just takes a bit more effort. Last summer, I decided to get serious about my weight, saw a dietician, and got serious about my food, and lost just over 30 lbs. I put some of the weight back on, but now I'm back to following my food plan, and am once again losing.

Can I lose weight on Seroquel?

Well, I’m gonna try.
My plan is to eat less wheat- that seems to make me bloated and bind water more than before starting seroquel.

I also plan to snack on fruit and vegetable.

What I have read is that seroquel can affect several things- both metabolism and also how the brain store fat/sugar. And can also cause craving for sugar/carbs. Latter maybe because it affects insulin and the body compensate by urging more carb/sugar.

And I have a water bottle with me all the time, trying to drink reasonably.

For me it’s easier to eat healthy than to resist the hunger. So I drink water, eat fruit and vegetable and try to eat wholegrain products and less carbs.

I believe everything is possible, some things are just really hard and/or take time.

Not much help in my answer, though, I just wanted to chime in and follow this thread.

Best of luck to us both

hi. tranquilizers/antipsychotics tend to cause weight gain, old and new. its worse with the 'atypicals,' and seroquel can be a real weight gaining medication. having said that...

its not as bad (in group level studies) as clozapine or zyprexa. some doctors prescribe metformin w/ seroquel and some other psych drugs, to reduce weight gain and keep the long term risk of metabolic disorders as low as possible.

i read some 'alternative health' stuff where some strong antioxidants--green tea extract, alpha lipoic acid--were used at fairly high doses alongside 'atypical' tranquilizer treatment. there was less weight gain and I think the EPS and akathisia scores in the antioxidant group were lower, too. always a good thing.

sorry about your situation. hope this helps.

I'm right there with you, possum. A few years ago when I was prescribed Seroquel I gained 100 lbs. Yep. And I gained it in less than a year. After some time I dropped the Seroquel way down, but instead of losing weight I just gained more. I am, by the way, a healthy eater. I do not eat junk food. Ever. The Seroquel just seems to screw with metabolism. Yesterday my pdoc told me I need to take 100mg. of Seroquel for awhile (I was on 50mg). I can see why she prescribed the higher dose, but I am really concerned about my weight and health.

So, while I'm not one who goes to the gym every day, I do eat quite carefully and get moderate exercise. I even tried riding a bike everywhere for 6 months (sold my car)...no weight loss at all. During that 6 months I did not gain weight, which was good. But I sure didn't lose any, either.

Lately all I have been eating is carbs. Bread. Toast. Sandwiches. Biscuits. Ice-cream. Chocolate and nuts. It's not even safe to have a box of cereal in the house as I end up eating it straight from the box. A constant case of the munchies.

Time to go an buy some fruit and vegies. There is a cheap fruit and veg place down the road from me. I need to get exercise in but have investigated walking groups but I can never keep up or go as far as others.

Sleeping too much. So tired. I need to find some motivation someplace. Don't think I will find motivation in bed.

Oh, that sure sounds like the "Seroquel Blues". Makes a person feel like eating tons of sugar, carbs, and sleeping. That's all I wanted to do when I was on 350mg of Seroquel. And if I didn't eat often I felt almost sick, as if I hadn't eaten for a long time.

I'm on Latuda ( weight neutral!!!!!!ha!) and struggling with weight gain too. Just talked to the doc about it today too, hard work is essentially what he said to do! Eat right and excercise....I hate exercise I hate sweating.

Personally, I had to go off the meds to keep the weight off.

But it is possible to lose weight with meds. I lost almost 50 pounds while on Lithium and Celexa. I just didn’t keep it off.

My little sister takes a low dose of Seroquel for sleep aid. She's gained a lot of weight so her pdoc has added metformin to her cocktail to curb hunger.
