GP's recommended Prozac. I've refused as I'm aware of the many, many side-effects and family members have had a bad experience with this particular AD.
Has anyone found Prozac has had a positive effect on them?
I sort of want to weigh up the odds before considering taking them, because at the moment, I'm only going downwards.

Anyone? x

Same reaction as sickntired. One positive thing is that it does not cause weight gain for me, as do other antidepressants.

I have been taking Prozac for a few years. I have not experienced any negative side effects, but each individual is different. I also take Effexor which is also an anti-depressant but works a little bit differently than Prozac. I've had positive results from both medications.

I've experienced both positive and negative results with prozac. My Aunt off prozac is .... aggressive, unstable, and paranoid, on the medication one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. She had the misfortune of losing her medical insurance and was unable to afford the medication.

My son was placed on prozac to compliment his ADHD medication that was no longer effective. I have no idea why to this day, and I should have gone with my initial instinct which was to demand a new medication. But I suspected he suffered from a mild form of depression and if it would make the old faithful ADHD medication that he'd been taking for years more effective what could it hurt? My well- mannered, kind, conciderate, thoughtful, teenaged son turned it to a vicious, angry young man. I had no idea that it was the Prozac, I thought it was some sort of hormone imbalance and spoke with his doctor about it. It turned out to be the Prozac, once he was off the medication my son returned.

In both cases the differences were very drastic.

It did help me. I felt like I walked out of the fog I had been in. It didn't keep working, but it worked for a long time. It didn't keep working because I needed therapy for long-term relief.

Are you considering seeing a psychiatrist? A GP may not be the best source for a medication recommendation. A psychiatrist is a specialist in medication; you might want to talk with a psychiatrist before deciding.

I hope you'll consider therapy too.

I hope you feel better soon!

Prozac (fluoxetine) probably saved my life. I took it for five years, and it was the first effective anti-depressant that I took (mid-90s).

I've read all the horror stories and dire warnings and claims of side effects .... but for me, it was great, no problems, just worked.

My libido took a hit at this time, and that may have been the fluoxetine (or it may just have been me).

Unfortunately, I eventually suffered "Prozac Poop Out" and it stopped being effective for me Prozac - positive or negative? . I have spent much of this decade working with my psych to find a replacement; Cymbalta plus Lexapro are currently doing a good job.
