I'm starting two new meds today..
Klonopin(clonazepam) and Effexor. Does anyone have experience with these? What side effects should I expect? |

I'm on both. No real side effects from the clonazapam. Effexor, when I first started it, I'd get wicked headaches but that went away after a few weeks, It changed my sense of taste, so there are some foods that I used to love that I can't stand at all now. I still have some trouble with nausea and dizziness about 4 hours after I take it, and I sweat more on it. It also wipped out my sex drive. Hope this doesn't scare you off. It's been a godsend to me in terns of helping with my depression.
Good luck. --splitimage |

I've been on Klonopin for a while and it's been a wonderful experience for me. I've experienced no side effects from it and actually find that it works better than Xanax for me since it seems less sedating. I can still function on Klonopin while Xanax sometimes made me sleepy.

The effexor took about 2 - 3 weeks before I noticed it having any real impact on my depression. I got full benefit at about 6 weeks.
Clonazapam is one of the slower acting antianxiety meds. You don't get the immediate calming effect that you get with say Ativan, but it stays in your system longer so you don't get big crashes either. I went from Ativan to Clonazapam gradually so I'm not sure how long it took before it had any effect on me. hope the meds help. splitimage |

Effexor was life-changing for me, but I was told by pdoc that the initial therapeutic dose is 150 mg qd.
Klonopin is a great for anxiety and/or sleep but has potential for addiction. Just keep an eye on it. Best, Okie

I have never taken klonopin but I have taken other drugs from the same family.
I do take Effexor XR and my dose is 225mg daily. It has been very effective for me. The only problem I have with it is increased sweating. I overheat very fast and so I always carry something to drink. The other comment I have on Effexor is that is has a very short half life so it's out of your body quickly if you stop taking it. Missing a dose or suddenly stopping Effexor can cause nasty side effects. I've been thru this when I missed taking it. |

Dipri are you taking regular effexor? Could you try the extended release? It might help with that.

I took both Effexor and Klonopin in combination for many years. The only thing I had to say about the Effexor is that it stopped working after about 6 years, so I had to switch to Lexapro. As for the klonopin, I knew that after I took it, I had exactly 45 minutes to go to bed or I would fall asleep wherever I happened to be. Certainly never had insomnia while I was taking it.

I think the Effexor is making it really hard for me to sleep. I'm up all bloody night...Pacing my apartment, trying to read, but can't concentrate. I hate it.
I'm seeing my psych again soon...I need something to help me SLEEEEEEEEP. |

the Effexor works on two brain chemicals mainly: serotonin and norepinepherine. That is why it is usually a very effective medication. Due to the seroternergic properties you may have the sexual side effects, dry mouth, and weight gain. The effect on norepinepherine can cause urinary hesitancy and a little agitation. If it gets you sleepy it is best to take it at night but I find it is activating for me. I take it for BP II and it is very effective.
I used to take Klonopin it is a long-lasting antianxiety med. It does not peak and valley much. However, you such feel some effect from it because it doesn't need time to be effective like Effexor does. Like someone else said, b/c of the half-life it is important to take the medication nearly the same time every day. Do not ever try to take yourself off the medication without a plan with your pdoc. That said it is a very effective medication.

I've been taking it at about noon...Its really weird. At night, after I take Olanzapine, I fall into a deep sleep, but a few hours later, I wake up wired and start tossing and turning til the wee hours of the morning. WTF.

I found for me I had to take it at night, because it didn't seem to have the energizing effect for me until morning the next day. You might try that and see how it does. Or try the reverse and take it very early?
