I'm asking for people's personal opinions...

Anyone have longish term experience with an AD (like 4+ months) where they did NOT gain weight?

Just looking for ideas to discuss with the pdoc when I see him.

No weight gain while on Effexor XR for 5 plus years. If anything it's messed up my appetite.

I started on Wellbutrin recently and have heard many people lose weight on it. It has reduced my appetite. I hope this holds up, as I would like to lose some weight.

Tell your pdoc that you want a "weight neutral" anti-depressant and he will know which ones fill the bill.

I'm on 150mg Effexor xr for a year. Acually lost weight. I am on other meds that have weight loss as side (anorexia) i.e. aricept and Chantix.
I am aware of the depressant side of chantix and have managed so far.

There is a wonderful On the Couch interview with Wyeths Dr. Phil Ninan on Pristiq. With Dr. Grohol and includes Effexor. It speaks alot of discontinuation symptoms i.e. Brain shivers. Check it out.

Took Effexor 150 xr for a year and lost weight. Also stopped alcohol which could be a factor. Substituted Pristiq 2 days ago. Supposed not increase weight. Peace

Christina 86,
Weight gain has always been a HUGE concern for me, especially when choosing meds. I have a twisted logic regarding this issue... Oh yeah sure, I have weight issues which cause me to have low self-esteem and depression, but you want to put me on meds to "cure" my depression, but they will cause me to gain weight... I guess they figure that at least I'll be a happy fatty. But to me, its just masking the problem.

****absulutely no offense to anyone at all, these are my personal issues****

Regarding your question, I have been taking 40mg of Celexa for 3 full months and have not only gained a single pound, but I have infact lost approx. 20+ pounds. I think that I was able to decompress emotionally and my body finally was able to relax and shed some weight. I have not changed any eating habits (increase/decrease of intake) or activity (virtually none).

Hopefully you'll give an AD a chance, when you feel better you can accomplish more!

Good Luck!

I have been on Wellbutrin for a couple years now and at first it made me extremely hungry! I did gain weight on it, although many people say they lose weight.

I am not happy with this gain as I am tall and was always happy with my height and weight (slim). I exercise strenuously, aerobics and weight training but still do not lose weight; I am sure the wellbutrin is contributing to it.

I see many above posters have lost/not gained on Effexor; I may ask my pdoc if I can try that..........as I cannot tolerate weight gain myself but this is just ME. Some people would rather have a few extra pounds if the med is helping their depression. In my case I get more depressed if I gain weight.

I'm wondering if the weight loss IS due to the creation of less anxiety, thus less cortisol, equalling weight loss?

Any drug that makes you feel hungry is a tough one, imo.
