Just saw the pdoc yesterday and he gave me a new drug to try in place of Concerta and Methylphenidate. It's called Vyvanse. The paper that came with it listed a lot of warnings, but I can't remember what warnings came with Concerta so perhaps they are the same. Is anyone else taking this drug? It's new, I hear. Any feedback on how it works? Thanks.

I'm not taking it but my PNP told me she likes it a lot and is prescribing it. It is more similar to Adderall than Concerta/methylphenidite. If you have been on Adderall and done well, this would probably work well for you too. Vyvanse is amphetamine linked to an amino acid. It is not active until the amino acid has been cleaved off in the body. It takes a while for the body to do this, so the drug is released more slowly--kind of an extended release version of Adderall that is kinder, gentler. It is less prone to abuse. But some people do better on Adderall XR because Adderall is actually a mixture of two different types of amphetamine (chemical mirror images of each other), whereas Vyvanse, once the amino acid is cleaved off, is one type amphetamine only.

If Vyvanse were not available, a similar switch by your doc would be from Concerta to Adderall. Was Concerta not working well for you?

I hope you can talk to your doc about worries about the warnings.

Concerta was working ok, but he thought the delivery method of Vyvanse would be better for me as I had to suppliment Concerta with Methylphenidate latter in the day.

I'm a little concerned if it is like Adderall as Adderall cause mood side effects for me. Do Concerta and Adderall use different chemicals? I'll have to go look that up and compare the three.

Concerta = methylphenidate
Adderall = mixed amphetamine salts, including d-amphetamine and l-amphetamine (chemical mirror images of each other)
Vyvanse = Lisdexamfetamine, which is broken down into the amino acid lysine and d-amphetamine (the active drug)

If you want an extended release form of Concerta, there is now a patch that you wear called Daytrana, which releases methylphenidate continuously. With this maybe you wouldn't need to supplement late in the day.

I just got prescribed Vyvanse. I don't know the dose yet. Anyone else have experience with this drug? Did it make your BP rise?
