Hello,
Are other prozac users experiencing vivid, fearful dreams regularly? If so, any ideas how to alleviate them other than stopping/reducing prozac dosage? Thanks!

I was prescribed a different antidepressant (zoloft) a few years ago to allegedly help with pain from a herniated disc. I began having violent nightmares of war. This was not normal for me at all. I stopped taking the zoloft and they went away. I then read violent dreams are a side effect of some antidepressants.

hi ocean,

prozac's actually the only antidepressant i haven't used. i'm on effexor xr and i have extremely wild dreams. they usually involve violence, towards me and others.

below info from this link: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.inhousedrugstore.com/anti-depressants/prozac.html>http://www.inhousedrugstore.com/anti-depressants/prozac.html</A>

The side-effects of Prozac include drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhoea, dry mouth, dizziness, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams, sweating and changes in vision, although most of these should diminish over time.

i know it's a store, but i'm too tired to look further. my sleep's all out of wack.

the weird dreams should subside after a few weeks. if they're bothersome, i'd contact the doc who prescribed them.

take care,

splash

hey guys

I get those dreams whenever my levels of a particular drug flucuate or change completely. It's a chemical thing that happens in your brain. For wahtever reason many of the psych drugs cause you to stay in 4th stage sleep where vivid dreaming and so-called night terrors happen.

If you change drugs yuo may or may nt get the same thing. You could try things like guided visualization cd's to relax you more deeply before you drift to sleep.

just a thought

Hi Martian, I was on Prozac a few months back recently I have been on Luvox (well, on and off). I liked the Prozac. I was really disappointed when my doc. switched my meds. I had a lot of faith in it. I was sure it was going to work for me. I personally don't think that I was on it long enough. The only side effect I did have was that everything felt more intense than it really was and being around a large group of people made me very anxious. My palms would sweat and I felt blood rushing to my hands. I have read many books where they say that some people have dramamtic reactions to Prozac. They describe it as their cloud of depression just lift away.......I guess it landed on me...lol. I wish I had that experience. Hang in there and give it a chance.

Greetings.......nightmares and vivid dreams are one of the side effects of Prosac. I had such terrible nightmares, nothing like I had ever experienced. My doctor told me to try taking it at different times of day. It helped, but not much. I had to switch to another ssri. I hear the new Celexa is good. I tried Zoloft also and Paxil and did not have the nightmares anymore, but they upset my stomach and had other side effects. I couldn't drive on Paxil. I would run redlights. Good luck I hope you find something to help you. If you have depression or anxiety, I would also recommend a long walk or make sure you are getting enough exercise daily. Its help me to break a sweat everyday. Dancing is good too. Also put yourself in a situatioin which makes you laugh daily. Watching a comedy or visiting or taling to a friend who makes you laugh is good also. I have a friend who every time I visit makes me laugh. I try to stop by and see her everyday. Good luck. I hope you feel better.

I've been using Prozac for a few months now and when I first started it, I had vivid dreams that seemed like real life. I could differentiate between real life and a dream, however, only when I woke up. It also causes me to wake up around 5-7 times a night which is really annoying. I was still in the hospital when these side effects occured{the first night I began taking Prozac} and told my doctor. They gave me 2 3mg melatonin pills. For those of you that don't know, melatonin is the chemical your body produces when it gets dark to make you tired. After about 2 days on the melatonin, my dreams went relatively back to normal. You also don't need a prescription to get melatonin. You can find it with all the vitamins{vitamin a, vitamin d, etc.}. I would recommend talking to your doctor before starting melatonin for dosage etc. Also, if for whatever reason melatonin doesn't work, which happens sometimes, there are other alternatives.

Hope this helped! Good luck; I know how much this sucks
