I have never had EMDR. Hopefully, someone will come along and share their experience. It's okay to be worried! I had a big thing come up a few weeks ago and I worried and prepared for a week for it. It is normal! We do our best and keep moving forward. This is all that we can do.............

(((((((Colleen))))))))

My T wants to do EMDR with me, but she said we need to wait until I am more stable. I am scared to do it too.
My T told me that the longer session for EMDR is to help you be able to deal with and 'contain' any stuff that comes up, so it should actually be a help.
I hope someone else will share their experiences, too.
Wishing you luck!

You are very brave! Remember to take it as slowly as you need to.
And afterwards if you don't think it is the right modality for you at the moment, you can always stop, and start again later, or not.
(at least that's what my T tells me )

I'll be thinking of you!

Hi...

I have been through a couple rounds of EMDR. I actually found the experience helpful to a certain degree. I look at it as being stuck in traffic. Before EMDR, there was some major gridlock on my freeways. You couldn't go anywhere. But during EMDR, even though we were bringing up stuff and stirring things up, I found that we were creating new lanes on our freeways, new off-ramps and on-ramps, and as we dealt with the major incidences that were causing the gridlock, traffic began to flow again, slowly, but at least we were moving.

Just remember that your T will (should) work with you to develop a safe place within yourself that you can go to, and she will help you go to if things become too intense.

Ultimately, for me, EMDR got the traffic moving, but it did bring more painful experiences to the surface. It was like we took off a layer of dead skin and the fresh skin underneath was more sensitive. It has been difficult for me to deal with the more intense emotions since going through this, but that shows movement, processing, and healing. Had I have known that EMDR would lead to more intense emotional pain for me, I would have still done it. At least now I can find more of my emotions, where as before, they were completely lost and irrelevant.

Take care, and best wishes for your session tonight. I think you will do great!! (if okay)

Ok. Cool....

You guys are slowly getting me to a not so bad state!!!!! You guys are awesome!. Thanks so much for the feed back on what to expect exactly. She explained it but I wanted to talk to somebody who had gone through it. I needed to hear it from somebody else.

I will post tonite and let you guys know.

Thanks
Colleen

CThomas,

I've done some EMDR, and my biggest recommendation is to take it slowly. If you begin to feel too overwhelmed with emotions during EMDR, let your therapist know you need to slow down. In EMDR, the client always has the right to set the pace. If at any time, it becomes too much, you can ask to stop. You are the one in control.
