I just had one of the most difficult weeks of my life. I got through it by thinking, each day-- “3 more days until therapy,” “2 more days until therapy,” etc. assuming that, during my session, I’d be able to get everything out, break down, do whatever I needed to— and let T take control and give me the understanding and support I needed. However, that didn’t happen today. First off, she moved my appointment at the last minute— I felt a little hurt that she moved me to accommodate someone else, but I agreed to it without complaint because she was still able to get me in. Second, I know I was visibly upset when I walked in because, just a few minutes before therapy, I ran into an acquaintance on the street and she stopped dead in her tracks and said: “Whoa, what’s wrong? You don’t look like yourself!” I brushed it off and said “oh, I’m okay” because she wasn’t the right person to have that conversation with. I knew I was on my way to T and I knew I’d have the chance to tell everything to T in just a few minutes. However, when I walked in, T didn’t ask me how I was (like she usually does) and she immediately started talking (she usually lets me start). T just completely missed the mark today—she failed to see how distressed I was, she failed to ask how I was doing, and she simply failed to “see” me; to be present with me. She started talking about “minor” issues until I found an opening to interrupt her and steer the conversation to the “major” issues I needed to talk about.
I told her, point blank, how distressed I was. I told her about the information I’d learned from my dad (detailed in my other thread), I told her my partner broke up with me, and I told her I went back to the doctor and they still haven’t been able to diagnoses my (physical) condition and, therefore, I’m in constant pain. I told her I’ve been having recurring nightmares and I’ve been so distracted I showed up to the wrong class on the wrong day! I told her I didn’t feel like myself and I didn’t know how what to do about it; how to just get through all of the things I’m dealing with. However, during this whole conversation, T basically looked bored. There was no empathetic look on her face, no remark like “I understand” or “that must be difficult” or “what do you need” or “how can I help”— instead T just said “I’ve seen you like this before; this isn’t the first time you’ve felt hopeless." ![]() I’m feeling hurt and upset right now and I don’t want to sit with this for another week. I have so many ruptures in my life right now (like with my partner) and I already feel so alone, that it feels like I can’t bear to be going through a rupture with my T (my FIRST rupture with her!). I’ve had other sessions where I’ve felt like she’s been a little off or a little distant, but nothing “big” and never at a time when I’ve been so vulnerable. A part of me wants to contact her, but another part of me thinks that is a bad idea. I don’t want to get into the habit of contacting her too much between sessions and I don’t want to “annoy” her or be too “needy.” I also don’t want to talk to her when I’m upset; if I decide to address these feelings with her, I want to do so when I’m level-headed and diplomatic. I just feel like I don’t know how to get through another week feeling so distressed. Ugh. Not sure what else to say or what to ask for… just needed to “put this out there.” Last edited by scorpiosis37; Oct 17, 2011 at 10:51 PM. |

I'm sorry your T wasn't there for you today in the way you needed and wanted her to be. From all you've shared before about her, I hope this is something you can work out and that any rupture heals quickly between you and she returns to being the support and help you need especially right now with so very much going on in your life ![]() As far as the 'this isn't the first time' comment, I really don't like it when anyone does that. Whether it is the first time for feeling something, the second or the hundredth there are always other things going on as well that make it not 'the same'; and in any case you still need help and support with it or you wouldn't be there. |

Wow, it SO stinks when T misses the mark like that. T and I have had some of those "misses", and it feels SO awful when it happens. The only thing I know to do is to be honest and tell T what happened. And it's OKAY to have feelings about it. It's GOOD to have feelings about it. You don't need to wait until you're level-headed. The October before last, I was STRUGGLING and T could not connect with it. I don't know why. I felt like I was making it so clear, but he was just so out of tune with me. I saw him twice a week, and it went on session after session. Finally, in one session, I just asked over and over "can you HEAR ME? are you HEARING WHAT I AM SAYING?" So not level-headed, really. And, finally, he heard me, and the minute he did, things felt a little better. Sometimes we just need to be seen, and heard. I know with my T, his own stuff gets in the way sometimes...he's hurt, or tired, or in some weird counter-transference moment. And I get that...he's just a person, like me. AND I still think it's okay to point it out when it happens, to at least give my point of view about how it feels, and to tell him what I need. And if he doesn't hear me the first time, it's okay to tell him again. Because what I DO trust is that he wants to help me heal. I'm so sorry you didn't get what you needed today, especially with everything you have going on. I wonder if you could have another session this week to try again? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() While I am not dealing with so many very big issues as you are, I recently had the same T experience of feeling like it was a time I needed T the most, but it didn't happen and worse, I felt totally unheard and unseen. We are working through it now but the one session where I waited and waited for it to come, holding off on melting down for 2 days as I counted the days to get to T, and where I sat in tears and said about my issue, "I can't DO this!" she was moving on to how I was going to be able to do 'this'. As if rushing past my feelings, as if I wasn't sitting there in despair and stating explicitly why. One thing she said was that she felt a desire to 'fix' and that is what made her talk about how 'this' could be done. So, ironically I had a need and desire to be rescued and she felt a desire to rescue but it bombed the way she went about it, or I don't know how to recognize it, or whatever. It just feels so awful to really want and need to be seen and heard and relieved, but for whatever reason it just doesn't feel like that is happening. ![]() ![]() |

How are you doing now scorpiosis? Did you decide what you are going to do?
