I have a chance to go do some advanced training for cub scouts (I assisstant lead my son's den, there's actually several female leaders in our pack!! ).

It requires a physical and one of the check boxes is "Has no uncontrolled psychiatric disorders", so I am scared to try and get it filled out. I don't know what would be considered uncontrolled... 2 months ago, I attempted suicide, was very uncontrolled then as I was going through major med changes. Now, I am on meds and things are somewhat better.

I really, really want to do this training, but I just don't know if I can because of that.

I'm so tired of mental illness controlling my life!

Fill it in at the desk, say, "That means psychosis, right?" and confidently mark that you don't have it.

Nicoleb2, did you read all the fine points on the form? I'm also involved in cub scouts and depending on where you are going and how long you are gone, some of the form can just be filled out by you and that is enough... for other occassions like going on adventure trips with the scouts, you need to fill out the whole form and have a physical filled out my doctor...

Just thought I'd bring that up...

I think "uncontrolled psychiatric disorders" would be the equivalent of "uncontrolled asthma"... controlled asthma is asthma that responds to the current medical treatment plan that I have in place... so I would think "controlled psychiatric disorder" would be one that responds to the current treatment plan... either one of those disorders could change quickly even if its currently controlled....

hope that helps

If you have good rapport with your PCP then maybe run it by your T, have T scribble a little note saying " susie q is under my care and is stable to participate BSA adventure training, and then go get the physical form filled out. If you do not have a good rapport with a PCP go to a Doc-in-the- Box and have the physical done there. I have no doubt that #1- you would not put your child in danger by participating if you were not stable and #2 the Doc-in-the-Box will fill the form out. If you are stable and your T says OK then the point is moot. Have fun.

Have not talked to my t yet. I see her again on Tuesday, so maybe we'll talk about it then... I really think I want to do this, as it would be an opportunity for advanced training, but also a real opportunity for my own personal growth.
