My T is reading a new book by Francine Shapiro, inventor of EMDR. It's titled: Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR. I wonder if any other Ts have recommended it yet. I read the 9 reviews on Amazon and they were all positive, 5 star ratings. I also read some excerpts from the book. It's for anyone, not just those going through EMDR, as the subtitle points out. The book is not available in most libraries yet since it's so new. My T is going to lend it to me when she's finished with it. Of course that's one book she's eager to read!
Thanks for this!

There was an article last week in the New York Times about EMDR. This article will also point you to a q&a article where Francine answers questions, and other stuff. I just found it again, their health stuff is divided up into like 4 places.

that sounds interesting! the 2nd T I had, in my parents' town, does EMDR, though she didn't do it with me (not enough time to start in with it) and she thinks it's a really great, helpful therapy and that perhaps it's something I should look into trying, if I could find a good EMDR trained therapist around here. in the meantime, I am reading the 1st book by Shapiro and this new one sounds worth a look into, too.
Thanks for this!

I'd like to try EMDR. Don't know much about it and no one has ever mentioned it to me, but I've heard it's helpful.
Thanks for this!

I just got this book from the library. A lot of information - i have to read slowly (i.e. read a little, put it down, read a little more, etc.) to absorb the information.

very interesting. a little scary too...

Rainbow ....................... can you imagine doing emdr on yourself?
it's something i know very little about; and mostly have only read about in connection to when you've shared
sometimes when you share it seems that you reach very emotional painful places where you are glad your T is there and with you;I'm just wondering what it would be like on ones own

Rainbow_rose which parts are scarying you?

i've just gotten to the part about finding your safe place. kinda scary if you struggle to find one. also EMDR is an unknown for me. who knows what will come up for me. but i'm curious enough to try.

My new T (the one I sought out because she does EMDR and specializes in trauma) recommends we wait a little before trying EMDR. It could make things worse for me to tough it out to just get through it. Right now I'm just working on grounding skills.

Thank you for the tip on the book!

tigergirl, you are not supposed to do EMDR on yourself. The author is clear about that. You can write down your triggers, the negative cognitions about yourself, and use floatback techniques to jog your memory, but you don't do the bilateral stimulation. She keeps making it clear that if anything comes up that's difficult, you should seek out a T.

When she talks about a technique called "the butterfly hug", she is careful to say that you do it slowly, not like EMDR is done. It's something in conjunction with a "safe place".

EMDR definitely needs to be done with a T!

I had a freakishly weird T try "emdr" on session 1. I freaked out at her waving her fingers, I cannot do eye contact with anything. She was just a nutjob though. My current T brought out rods to hold in your hands once that vibrated...I kept thinking how many hands had touched them and all the germs even though he sanitized them with purell very liberally in front of me. So I don't know much about EMDR, but the thought of it really freaks me out.

I wouldn't think that's how you sanitize stuff. What works on skin wouldn't necessarily work on an object. In beauty school, to sanitize implements between customers, we wash them under hot running water with a nail brush and antiseptic soap; then soak for 20 minutes (or as directed) in a special solution (like the blue stuff) which is also anti-viral, then let it air-dry. That's why I tell my T that my state license is worth more than his - I can buy chemicals that he can't

With all my anxiety, I never thought about the hand buzzer thingies needing to be sanitized. Does everyone know how dirty money (cash) is? I'm not going to worry about the EMDR equipment. I don't eat it.
