And without a good reason, they are not going to do just anything a human wants. When I took my dogs herding, they would bring me sheep about three times and then they were done and wanted something new to do. So I paid the sheep person to let me bring my dogs to her so they could do farm chores - which they loved. They would do several different things with sheep and ducks. Clearly I have a screw loose to give someone money to let my dogs do their farm chores. But it made the dogs so happy.

The problem I have with giant breeds, aside from the great gobs of slobber, is their short average life span.
I wouldn't want a Border Collie for that reason and many of the Aussies here seem to be quite aggressive to other people or other dogs. I wanted a smooth collie, but there aren't many of those here.

I chose a giant breed bred not to slobber (though they are still messy drinkers and their coat collects the water, which they then generously share with you afterwards). My pup would love to spend the day doing farm tasks, but I'm not sure he'd actually be very helpful. In fact, I'm certain he would be mostly unhelpful as he bumbled along enjoying himself immensely.

I'd almost like a sighthound one day...but I think they might be a bit too independent and cat like for me. My pup is already stubborn enough for my liking. One thing (I'm sure he learned from the cats) is that if the front door is closed and he's outside, he'll bark. When you open the door he gives you the "what?" look and then slowly turns and walks off in the other direction.

That's a lovely story. And what is money for, if not to make your dogs happy?

Good morning...

Loving all the breed talk. I would love to get my dal's around horses, they are supposed to be amazing with horses. They are cat-like in movement, and extremely clean animals. They are high stung though and you need to be firm with them. Lex is angelic and so well mannered, Sadie on the other hand is the goofiest dal I have ever met, and obstinate. She can jump up onto the kitchen counters, and I have found her on the table as well. Larger dogs don't usually put themselves on counters and tables. She also prefers to be up on the back of a couch or chair, instead of at your feet. I should have trained her better, but she is simply too adorable for me. So she's been spoiled. She is a bit of a fraidy cat too, so she is stand offish with people. Lex is amazing with people and children though. She's a lady.

That's a good point about them with horses. I'm nearly sold. Plus clean and with cat like movement. So opposite of my giant goof...and I'll be ready for something a bit different next time!

Current pup moults about equal to what 10 medium sized hairy pups would...and so next time...I swear short hair. (I said that last time too.)

I'm off to bed with the next text book. Probably not the brightest idea, but neither is being so far behind after just one week back.

Have a good day (or night) everyone!

Yes Artist, dalmatians. I have two. I used to foster them and have had up to 6 at one time. I would train and place them. They tend to be a breed frequently purchased for children because of the movies, and they really aren't a children's dog. They are a lot of work and require a tremendous amount of exercise. They can be very destructive as young ones too, I still crate my 2 yr. old when we aren't around because she's unpredictable.

Yes, years ago I knew someone who bought a Dal but she was not the right person for them, she was dominant and persistent enough as a result the dog ran her life.

My little boy is a corgi, lab, aust cattle dog cross

I have to purchase sturdy cat toys for my dals, as dog toys are too mundane for them. They do like the puzzle type toys though, where you hide treats. They also like to do agility training. If you keep them challenged and busy they are a wonderful dog.

I have only known one Dalmatian and he was a maniac. My dogs are cat like in their attitude. Not their personal habits. At one time they were an extremely popular dog, got way inbred, fell off because of problems and coat. I get a little panicky whenever a movie comes out with them in it. They are collies. I have a rough rescue and a smooth.

Male dals can be extremely aggressive if not handled properly from the get go. It is very hard to train that aggression out of them. They are very bright though, I think that's half the problem. Mine are sweet in nature though. My 3 yr old niece can do almost anything to them and just get licks and sniffs back. They've never so much as growled at her, and she sticks her hands in their mouths and everything. She has a mini "vet kit" and likes to give Sadie pretend check ups.

ETA: The ones found in pet stores are absolutely the most difficult to manage, I have had several come thru here. Established breeders tend to breed for temperament, so those are usual gentle loving dals.

We tried fostering collies for awhile but my partner could never let them go so we had to stop because the house was full.
