HI-

Has any one read "Women Who Run with The Wolves"? This is the book my T thinks I may be intelligent enough to read......I love to read, and probably read at a higher level than she does. The more I think about that insult, the more angry I become.(I LOVE this smiley!)

Thanks!

Did your T really phrase it like that? Are you sure she was making a comment on your intelligence? So often when we're insecure we'll see insults where none were intended.

I LOVE that book. I attended a women's group once in which we read a chapter at a time and then gathered to discuss what the message in the chapter meant to us. Very nice and very empowering. But, it's not for everyone.
Thanks for this!

I hope she meant that you would "get" the book when others might not!

That book changed my life but it requires a high degree of emotional and personal intelligence, not just whether you can read or not. Sounds to me like your T was complementing you.

I've been listening to the author, Estes. She has a collection of bedtime stories for adults, with a soothing intro to wind down at night, that helps me sleep sometimes. She has a very wise, soft, beautiful voice. And I did read some of Women Who Run with the Wolves, and can only imagine your therapist was being complimentary when she recommended it.
Thanks for this!

Thanks...I will order it.

I am insecure, but not about my intelligence.

The conversation: T: Do you like to read? Me: Yes, I love to read. T: There is abook I can suggest, but it is difficult to read. I guess you are intelligent enough to read it. Me: A non verbal scowl and wide eyed look.

A prior therapist suggested a book for me "Trauma & Recovery"...however, she knew me fairly well and said that it may be difficult to read emotionally, and was concerned about that. That was a "heavy" book.

My new T, IMHO, is high on herself (good to have high self esteem), probably would be good for me in about a year......she does not understand the PAIN I am in...and how I barely function.

I jsut checked Amazon cuz the book sounded interesting, and there are two different books with that Title. Whcih one is it?
Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype / Begushaa s wolkami: Gensky arhetip... by Clarissa Pinkola Estes (2011)
OR
Women Who Run with the Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman May 7, 1998

Hmmm. they both have the same author. I wonder if she just renamed it in a subsequent edition?

I think I hear what the T was saying, and how it was received, and I wonder if she was giving you a compliment (her intent) in a paternalistic way (which is uncomfortable for you- which is understandable).
Thanks for this!

I had a T recommend "Women Who Run with The Wolves" for me a long time ago, and I got it but never read it...although I don't remember why. I was an English major, so I am sure I certainly COULD have. It might have just been something I never got around to doing; it is not a small book, if I correctly recall.

The conversation you had with your T re: the book would have been freaking annoying. I would have asked her if she would like to do an IQ test on me first, but only because I am super sarcastic in general. I am sure if you are interested in reading it, you can and will read it.
Thanks for this!

It is a bad/lazy choice of words using "intelligent" in this context I think.

Thanks Syra-

I guess it is the same book.

I used to read Wayne Dyer and Miquel Ruiz "the Four Agreements". I was all into the Law of Attraction and positive energy....but that was prior to my psychotic break/deep depression/ overwhelming anxiety/PTSD.

I do think her intentions are good~She is not in a posh office, or in a practice @ a university hospital setting. I am not presenting myself to her as I would have 3 yrs ago....or to meet someone for a date or shopping...no makeup, no contacts/wearing glasses, my hair needs to be highlighted. Trust me, I look horrible.

If Maya Angelou can make a positive statement on the reading of this book, it sounds good to me!!

I am grateful to WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES and to Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The work shows the reader how glorious it is to be daring, to be caring, and to be women. Everyone who can read should read this book."--Maya Angelou

Lost Key.

Thanks. I can be very sarcastic as well, and some people do not like it, some of my previous co workers found it funny. I will suggest an IQ test if she mentions something similar again...It was over 140 when I was a child. It is almost as if there is an antagonistic relationship forming...which is NOT GOOD.

I have been in T, at length, at various points in my life....I usually do well with someone whom is older..probabably subconciously substituting a caring T for my toxic mother.

But this one does not get I cannot function, I am not working, and the only thing I do every day is brush my teeth.

I have that collection! I listened to it over and over! I haven't read Women Who Run With Wolves yet.

"Women who Run with the wolves" is a good adjunct to therapy!! When you get it, the chapter on wolf mothers/"good enough mothers" is a decent analogy for therapy (the "good enough" therapist)

If you like myth, legend and storytelling/ Joseph Campbell-y things then you will love the book. My T thought the the writing style was unnecessarily dense and convoluted but hey I like it.

I can relate, my previous coworkers used to think I was rather amusing as well. And wow, you have nothing to lose if she gives you an IQ test that's for sure (but I had that feeling when I made that comment). It's often super intelligent people who, at some time in their lives, have a time when they must struggle through something huge and painful.

And hey, my mother was toxic, too...do they come in another flavor?? I have been in T for 30 years and I am now in my mid-30s. I actually went back to my childhood T, who I saw from age 7-19, last year to see if she could be my T again. We bashed heads like two bulls fighting...it was a constant, nasty battle. She has turned into a horrible, bitter person...and then she tried to blame the whole thing on me and my attitude. One day after trying for 5 months I was like NEVERMIND, I just can't keep trying this and she was basically like "OK then" and was extremely rude about it. So just last year I learned that Ts can be toxic, too. I hope things improve with yours!

I get the brushing your teeth thing, too. I am not working and just filed for disability myself as I can barely manage to eat/shower, etc. Lots of hugs to you and definitely hoping you find some helpful people in your life.
Thanks for this!
