Til you decide if this is the right T for you? I have had 5 appt's now with my new t. He seems nice but I do not feel like we are headed in the direction I would like to be going. I need help in learning skills in how to cope/manage my anxiety. We just talk about my previous week. The anxiety I have is pretty severe. I am pretty much isolated and crippled by it and need the right kind of help. Not just be given pills - because what do you learn by taking them? Nothing because I have been fighting this for 17yrs now. Ex I get anxious - mind says take xanax I want coping skills to conquer the anxiety.

Have you talked to him about your goals in therapy? I think that would be a good move. They can't help you reach your goals if you don't tell them what those are. Also, it takes as long as you feel like it does. There's no set amount of time.

We wrote out a very detailed treatment plan yet to start working on any of it. After last therapy experience I am putting a limit I wasted 2 yrs working on a disorder I never had and the anxiety got worse as a result.

I understand that. Can you tell your T how you are feeling about the speed of things, and tell them about your history in therapy?

I did explain the previous experience he seemed to understand the frustration. Like I said so far its been just talk therapy - I do not need that - we talk about silly stuff video games (he was a gamer). I need the kind of therapy I received in CBT many yrs ago - where the therapist picked apart my thoughts around the anxieties and gave me ways to challenge my thinking - coping skills- then would give me homework to work on during the week. That was productive.

I will bring it up to him that I want to get cracking at this ASAP.

His method of therapy may not be like CBT, where there's picking apart things and giving homework. And like someone else mentioned, he may want to build trust and develop a relationship before jumping into things.

Some ppl have anxiety, that is physiological, or something to that effect, my T, described to me. Means, for some of us it's not a matter of mind over matter.
Do you also have a pdoc?

4-5 appt's he should have a good idea about me. Plus I had a comprehensive intake that took a few hrs to diagnose me. Social Anxiety/panic disorder with agoraphobia. I have a nurse practitioner very rare to see a pdoc here these days but like I told her you can give me pills but that just masks all my issues and she agreed. She said i need to learn skills from the provider to manage the anxiety better.

Have an appt Thursday with T so we will see.

Had my appt and it didn't go over well. T said
1) I need to make friends and be apart of something
2) I should maybe think of the AA saying change People and Place - and maybe move
3) I have xanax take it to go out
**keep in mind I been dealing with social anxiety for close to 17yrs and 5 yrs of of it I been agoraphobic.**

I replied back with please help me with the anxiety so I can do those things - that is where he responded I have xanax. I said that isn't teaching me how to overcome my anxiety. Moving pissed me off because more than anything I would love to get out of this hell hole state more than anything and if I can't walk around the block how the hell would I be able to go back home 3000 miles away. I feel stuck and trapped here!!!

I terminated my services with that T. I did find someone who "specializes" exclusively in anxiety disorder treatment FINALLY. I have an appt set for March 4th. I spoke briefly with new T and she seemed to understand what I was seeking and how she could help me achieve it Here is to HOPE bc the therapy I have here the past 3yrs has been so ****** and damaging.
