So my question is, inspired by another thread.. What kind of therapist is your T?
Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Counselor, Social Worker etc?
And did you chose them specific to their title or because of other reasons?

I chose mine before I even know what her title was. (She is a LPC) I chose her because of the description in her profile and because it said she was specialized in trauma and PTSD. It worked out great..

What about you? And what do you think are the advantages, disadvantages?

Various different labels don't mean much when it comes to whether a T is good at therapy. It mostly distinguishes what other things they can do and what they specialize in. For example, a MFT is trained to handle families, marriages, and individuals. A LCSW is trained in community resources as well as therapy. And a PsyD is trained in clinical research as well as therapy.

Mine is a psychologist. I did choose him in part because of his level of training but not entirely. I had it narrowed to two in my town (same office actually). One was an LPC and mine was a PhD. I went with the PhD. Worked out since the other guy ended up moving away a few months later.

Insurance coverage was my first criteria for choosing a therapist. There was no way I would have been able to afford therapy without insurance, so I worked from our insurance list and narrowed it from there.

I've had three different therapists, all very good, with three different training and degree backgrounds, so I don't put a huge amount of weight on titles. Quality is quality.

I chose the most senior psychiatrist I could find. That's all I was interested in, someone who had seen it all before and wouldn't give a flying hoot about my story and def not a woman who could, god-forbid, empathize! I found my ideal T.

My T is a psychiatrist who offers psychodynamic psychotherapy. I first saw him as a pdoc, to discuss my medication, on the recommendation of my then-T. I knew very little about him beforehand, but the first time I ever met with him, I told him more things and more personal things than I had ever told my therapist, and I found him much easier to communicate with. When I realised that ex-T was really not the one for me, I asked my pdoc if I could see him for therapy. He is an excellent doctor and therapist and a very empathetic person, and he has helped me tremendously.

Well, I've yet to meet or hear about any therapist in my country who is a social worker. I know it's possible but I don't know of any. Counselors are something different from therapists here (and one has to be a psychologist in order to be a licensed counselor).

My therapist is a psychologist, as are most therapists here. Some therapists are psychiatrists, but not many. So that's why I chose a psychologist. My therapist is also a counselor but I perceive what we are doing as therapy, not just counseling (but it's a little bit of both, really).

I chose my particular therapist because I knew him and trusted him. I worked with him in a project he did with a colleague as part of his Master's degree program while I was an undergrad student in psychology. I chose him over his colleague because he was much more experienced and it showed.

Psychologist in training to be a psychotherapist. I have no idea what else but since she's so good for me I don't even mind...

My T is a psychotherapist and has a degree in social work, but she's not an LCSW. I think in Canada it's different; most psychotherapists are MSWs and RSWs (registered social workers) but aren't social workers who work in the community like in the US; most of the ones who do therapy are just in private practice. All the Ts I was consulting are MSWs, and it just worked out that way; most psychologists are way too expensive to pay out of pocket and most psychiatrists have long waiting lists since they're covered by OHIP. CBT T was a psychologist and $200 an hour, which my father paid out of pocket only because he thought I would find it very helpful, which I didn't, so I stopped seeing her. Past long-term T was a psychotherapist with an M.Ed in applied psychology, and ED T had a master's degree in nutritional science in the area of psychiatry, but she was a counsellor, not a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

I see an MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) as an individual. We tried the "family" part but that was a failure.

My long-time medical doctor finally convinced me to get help. I gave her a list of female therapists of all types, within a 20-mile radius, that were covered by my insurance. Using her professional resources, my doctor decided on one therapist. I made the introductory appointment, she agreed to take me on as a patient, and I have been seeing her ever since.

I first saw my pdoc for therapy. When I needed more intense, weekly sessions, he referred me to a therapist. She is a social worker (LICSW) and very good.
