Saw this quote and thought of my mother and the mothers of some folks on here: Biology is the least of which makes someone a mother. -Oprah Winfrey

Unfortunately, a lot of us just got stuck with the least of that which constitutes a mother.

My mom tries to take care of everybody but herself, and winds up helping nobody, especially herself. I try so hard not to be the same. I don't want my daughter to grow up like me.

Oh yes. We gave our books their own room and it smells great in there :-) (We had to move from a flat to a house about ten years ago, because we had no more bookshelf space.) I will not stop buying and reading paper books, but the ebook reader is great when travelling.

Sure, I prefer greyscale to black-and-white, and I don't particularly enjoy novels where you're sure that particular characters are going to survive, but there are so many fantasy authors who do it better and more interestingly than Martin (in my not at all humble opinion ) Glen Cook, Steven Brust, Joe Abercrombie, Cherie Priest, Scott Lynch, Liz Williams... so many books, so little time.

Do you like classics? I might've asked you that before. I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Have you read it?

EDIT: Also, do you mostly read in Swedish or in English?
I read Fahrenheit 451 a long time ago... I cannot really remember much of the plot, though I do know the basic story arc. I do enjoy many of the classics - and in Swedish I almost only read classics, not a lot of contemporary authors (I am one of the three people in this country who hasn't read Stieg Larsson!) But probably 90% of what I read is in English. And maybe 75% of that is genre literature - science fiction or fantasy.

It's nice to hear that you are on a fiction trip. Reading fiction makes life better.

And now I'd better shut up. When I start talking about books, there is no stopping me. Early start tomorrow so I'd better go to bed.

A film critic wrote of Troy that there was "no one to root for". Achilles is a psychopath, Paris is a wimp and Hector is killed.

There was a very interesting prediction that look likely to come true.
People had huge viewing screens in their living rooms that connected them to a 24-hour-a-day reality show that acted as a surrogate family. In fact, in the delux service, the "family" would speak to you and even appear to listen.

Flat screen TV, reality television and internet, all in one.

Just had to do two hours of programming under panic conditions. But that's the job, right?

PS: My cellphone coverage has evaporated. Yay!

Ahhh Programing, I did that when I was younger (mostly in High School and College) but haven't done it myself in years (and honestly I don't miss it one bit).

One time i was in the elevator at my apartment building - i live in a college town - and these two student age guys were talking, and theyre like, "oh what a horrible thing i had to do today - i dont know how anybody does that for a living etc etc" and the city had just opened a new recycling center so im thinking maybe that? But i take a chance and i say, "you guys are talking about computer programming, arent you?" And theyre like yes! How did you know? Im like, hey i used to be young and beautiful... it was totally funny, in a way!

I remember one time when I worked in an office building where a lot of people there were programmers and hearing them discuss coding in the elevator all the time.

I think the reason why I stopped programing was that I just got bored with it, I'm someone who needs to be active and not spend my whole work day looking at lines of code.

I've always loved books! I read everything, including cereal boxes. When I was in first or second grade, I had to memorize and recite a poem. I can't remember the whole thing now, nor do I remember the title. I've even tried to google it, with no success. I just remember the beginning: "Books, books, books! What a treasure they hold! The tales they tell, and the songs they sing..."

I find that my irritation- which I had gotten rid of for a period of time- has now turned into anger and hatred. Instead of getting irritated about stuff, I get flat out angry and it fills me with rage that I get pains in my body. I feel like my psychiatrist is just going to say that it's normal or decrease my anti-depressant intake- which I don't want. :/

I don't like what this anger is doing to me though. I've become a snarky and rude person. I can't hold back on my mean remarks :/

I'm actually even angry right now about a work incident that I can't even work on my essay outline which is due tomorrow...

That's pretty much my dream. To have my own little library at home. Yesterday (before I read your post) it hit me that there's no space in my room for another bookshelf. I bought one the other day so now I've got two but I'm not sure what I'll do when they're both completely filled with books. There's still quite a bit of space left in the shelves but I reckon that'll change pretty soon.

I haven't read that much fantasy apart from Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings (+ The Hobbit) and A Song of Ice and Fire. If you could choose three fantasy books to recommend to me, which ones would you choose?

Well, I guess I'm one of the other three people then. I haven't read Stieg Larsson either. I've been thinking about buying the Millennium Trilogy for a while but I always manage to buy other books instead. Most of the books I read are in English as well. Probably about 90 %, if not more. I pretty much only read Swedish books in Swedish (which I don't do very often). If the book is originally written in English then I really want to read it in English. If it's in Russian or some other language I can't speak then I might read it in English or in Swedish, though mostly in English.

I think it's pretty great to talk about books. Especially with people who seem to love them as much as I do.

Well, when it comes to Game of Thrones I think it's more like you can "root for" a lot of different characters. I think that makes it rather interesting.

That sounds really tough, penguin. I think I can relate a little. It really sucks when you feel the anger just bubble up and take over. I hope you'll feel more calm in the morning.
