I'm worried he's gonna say "You don't need all these medications" and he will not prescribe me anymore. I normally went through my normal doctor but they said I need medication management from a psychiatrist. I'm worried he's gonna take off my Provigil or Prozac or Xanax or something like that or something else

What's gonna happen on my first visit? What questions will be asked, what will we talk about and what will it be like?

I think very few psychiatrists ever said "you don't need all these medications".

When you first meet with a psychiatrist he or she will ask about your symptoms, medications, family and medical history, education and employment, living situation, relationships etc... They also note your behavior, dress and speech. Some will make a diagnosis at the end of the first appointment and may prescribe medication or make adjustments.

Seeing a psychiatrist might help you a lot more than a GP who is not trained to diagnose and treat mental illness. I definitely got answers and much better results with my psychiatrist.

That's highly unlikely that a psychiatrist would think your GP is giving you too many medications - most often it's the other way around.

A psychiatrist will want to assess your condition so you are diagnosed accurately and be sure that you are taking the proper medications. They'll want to discuss your mood and other symptoms, any side effects, how you sleep, energy level, functioning, etc. It is wise to see a psychiatrist for psych medications, they are really the only doctors who can accurately monitor their effectiveness or ineffectiveness and make proper changes if needed.

My Pdoc is one of the few that said you don't need all those medications, but he also said he will keep writing the scripts for them until I was ready to wean off them.

Good thread. Thanks for the OP and the discussion. I'm seeing a pdoc for the first time a week from Monday. Not too apprehensive about it though. More interested in having a discussion about medications that I haven't felt I could have with my family doc, because the pdoc should know more about them and all that.

Hello,
The psy md will take your whole history-meds, what worked/not worked, side effects, family hx, telationship hx, work or school hx, how you are feeling-mood, energy level. Just telk them all of it because you want him to be able to help you adjust meds when needed. Also, pdoc really do know the psych meds better than many gps***some gps are afraid of psych meds and will give only minimal doses/then wonder why its not working for you!! I am VERY sensitive to any type meds, for example if side effect is nausea, I will vomit like 20x/day for 2wks, so my psy md knows we have to always try baby doses wirh me and if I say side effect is too much-she listens/if side effect is that bad to me...it doesn't improve in 3wks while I get used to med.
