stopdog and brown owl and other Austen readers, have you ever read anything by Patrick O'Brian? (I may have asked this before...)

Never heard the of Patrick O'Brian, is he an oldie like Austin? Would you recommend him? Is he American? I love Gaskell too. Terrible confession - I don't often enjoy American novels.

Should I tell my t about the creepy old pdoc who assessed me for the Mood Disorders clinic, there's nothing I can put a finger on . He just seemed creepy and all those alarm bells were going off.

The fine weather, for which I have waited and prayed so long, is making me tired and manic.

I'm sorry to see you are feeling rejected.

What could be sillier and more fun than that?

Is not apologising an option?

No, an Englishman. He lived 1914-2000, and wrote a series of novels - 21, to be exact - set at the time of the Napoleonic wars. He has been compared to Jane Austen because his novels are set in that era, and because he had a marvellous grasp of Regency language. I definitely recommend his books; the first one is called Master and Commander, the second one is Post Captain. (There was a film made some years ago called Master and Commander; it contains pieces and episodes from four or five of the novels. It's a good film, as films go, but it does not have of the real strengths of the novels - the dialogue and the humour.) I could go on and on about why I like the books so much, but I think the best recommendation I could make is simply to read the first one or two.

I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, and read British and American authors fairly indiscriminately. (I have some Scottish favourites - Iain (M) Banks, Ken MacLeod, Charlie Stross.)
Thanks for this!

Hey, it's my birthday!
H has gone to bed, which is good, because he is a bit poorly and irritating me by coughing on purpose.
Prosecco anyone?

If it's bothering you, you should! I have found it's best to trust one's judgment about creepy people.
For example, I worked in retail in college and there was this assistant manager I had nicknamed "Mr. Creepy" (for no exact reason except for a feeling I had). I was friends with the manager who told me about a comment Mr. Creepy had made re: me, and I was definitely right, yuck!

So I am watching "Scrooged"...it's one of the two Christmas movies I like. The other is "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"...the cartoon version.

I've been trying to think of Swedish Christmas movies and only come up with one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagan_...ssons_julafton - finally I gave up and went to Wikipedia to see if there are any others. There aren't. I mean, there are a few Swedish films with a Christmas theme, but those tend to be made for kids, or else they are either horror movies or films about drinking and family fights - which is what most Swedish films are about anyway as far as I know. There don't seem to be any movies made in Sweden about togetherness and warm happy Christmas feelings, except for the one I linked to above, which is excellent (but not romantic!)

I might be wrong, though. I am not particularly familiar with what's popular or classic in movies, so I'm not the best person to talk about it.
Thanks for this!

One of my family's favorite more recent (relatively speaking) movies is The Ref.
The mother/wife makes them wear the St. Lucia candles on their head.
