How many T's have you had? How long did you stay with each? Were there times when you were with multiple ones at once? Did they all do the same type of therapy, or have you done different types with them?

I've had two. The first one I only saw two or three times, and she was CBT. I just wasn't that into CBT. I've been seeing my current one for about six months, and she just does the regular talk therapy.

Just the one. On and off for exactly one year now. He's CBT-ish (though I've never explicitly asked). I've found it helpful for some things, less so for others.

Only 3 that really count. I worked with each of them for several years at various times in my life. I test drove some others that I only saw a few times before deciding they weren't for me; I don't really count them -- couldn't even tell you their name or what they looked like at this point because I saw them so briefly.

Of the 3 I worked with, I saw the first two each for about 3 years-ish. My most recent I saw regularly for about 8 years and sporadically for a couple more before being finished. None of the professed to use any particular therapy approach -- I'd say they were all rather eclectic. The most recent leaned toward behavioral approaches, but was still essentially eclectic.

All three were fantastic therapists, perfectly suited for what I needed at the time but very different in way too. I found I needed different things at different times in my life and am glad I had the opportunity to move on to new therapists as I got older who shed a fresh light on what I needed to work on.

Ugh, more than 6. If you count all therapists I have ever seen.

Nos. 1 and 2 last year for 20-some sessions each. No. 3 for 5 sessions so far.

Years ago, I saw one for about 6 sessions. It was always going to be temporary as I was graduating from college and leaving town.

And then there are the 5 I saw for one session each. I didn't go back because they each were annoying/obviously incompetent and useless.

I've seen 6 indivudeal T's. Soon there will be no 7.
I've been in grouptherapy twice. We had therapy for 4-5 afternoons a week. There were different kinds of therapy and each sort was given by a other T.
So if you count all the different kinds of T's have seen, then it are about 28.

I had one about 10 years ago for few years. It wasn't productive therapy. She was nice but we never discussed anything at depth and it was kind of waste of time. I did like having general conversation with her so it was all right I guess.

The one I see now I've been seeing for 1 and a half and she is good. Maybe I was just ready for some work

. I saw an intern briefly prior to my first therapist and she sucked. After seeing her few times I told her I started dating one guy but he doesn't seem like a good catch and I think I should stop seeing him although I do like him. She all of a sudden asked if I think I should take medication. I was mortified. Asked why. She says because you appear sad. I am like yes I am telling you I gonna dump this guy of course I am not happy jolly. Gee. She brought up medication one more time. I think I worked full time at the time and was in grad school full time and had a kid so I was very tired. She again asked if I want Meds. Wtf. She was bad news

[QUOTE=ilikecats;4915504]How many T's have you had? I've met "long term" with three different therapists. The first retired after we started seeing each other for about a year. She referred me to her partner--I went 5 or 6 times and just couldn't get into seeing him (didn't count him in the 3 because I never thought I settled enough to call what we were doing therapy)

Then I saw the second one (after interviewing about 10 or 11 other therapists--jeesh, that was a long process!). I stayed with her for about 2 years and then had to move across the country. I thought I'd try things without a therapist because I didn't want to do the interview process again, but some serious health issues created a need for therapy again. Soooooo, I started interviewing for number 3. I swear I interview about 18 or 20 therapists. It was grueling. I think it's because there were so many therapists where I moved and I didn't know anyone so I couldn't get a referral.

I've been with #3 for about a year or so now. I like her and I figure when I'm through with her, I won't be doing another search because I'll be headed for the grave

Were there times when you were with multiple ones at once? When I was interviewing therapists here, I did sometimes have two interviews in a single week. A few times, I thought I'd found the right one and stuck it out for about a month or so . . .one for 6 months until I found that she had a serious sanction against her by her governing body.(I didn't count any of them in the count because I really don't feel that I was doing any good solid work. . . just floundering around.

Did they all do the same type of therapy, or have you done different types with them? The first two were psychodynamic and the third one is relational psychoanalytic (not a blank slate).

How many T's have you had? 3

How long did you stay with each? #1, about 30 minutes. Literally. #2, about 6 months give or take. #3, going on 4.5 years and counting.

Were there times when you were with multiple ones at once? Nope.

Did they all do the same type of therapy, or have you done different types with them?
Y'know, I have no idea of the type of therapy the 1st 2 did. I was quite naive when it came to types of therapy back when I saw them. They were both a long time ago.

I tried on in my early 20s for about two years - we became friends after I quit. I saw another for about three months in my late 30s, and now in 50s I see two different ones. Seeing two has worked the best for me.

The first one and current two are psychodynamic.

Back in my college days (early 90's) I saw one for a about 6 months then the college stopped offering the service and she didn't accept my insurance so we ended it. I have been seeing my current t for about 7 years...that is it.

I put 3, though i guess i should have put 4, as i saw one with my mother (he was her T), and twice on my own, though it was so inconsequential that i don't even count it.

The longest T relationship i had was 5.5 years, and i probably stayed a few years too many, but I just didn't know.

I saw another T concurently with that T. She was an EMDR T, and for a few months, I saw both T's at the same time (with my long term T's office). Then I moved to seeing my long term T one week, EMDR T another week. I didn't do much EMDR because i didn't find it helpful. I had no major trauma to focus on.

And now I am with current T, which is a MUCH better fit, and I've seen her for 7 months.

About 20 years ago H and I saw a MFT for a few months.

2007 started with t1 (general, Internal family systems)
2011 started with t2 (EMDR) and t3 (lots of experience with DID)
t 3 retired and I replaced him with a new t who specializes in SE and brain spotting.

So currently, I see 3. Internal Family systems, EMRD, and brain spotting. It works for me.

I have seen 6 therapists. I have no clue what kind of therapy they did. My first one I saw for a couple of years. The others I only saw for a handful of sessions. They were awful. It was hard to find the right one. I feel like I have struck gold with my current T I have been seeing for over 10 years (with a break in between).

Really just one but I did go to a pricey outpatient program once and it wasn't Wirth squat. Probably part of the reason I choose to not try until this current time happened across my path.

ive had 4

i saw this man when i was put against my will into this abusive teen treatment center for 8 months.

i saw my former T for 7 years right after i got out of that place

after i told about former T i entered another residential program where i met with a woman T for 6 months

my woman T went on vacation and my current T decided to see me in the interim, i liked him and his style way more than the woman T, requesting him to be my T. he was hesitant given my history with former T, but eventually decided to work with me, and i've been working with him for 5.5 years

Long term T is existential / humanistic and been with him 6 years. EMDR T running concurrently with that for 4 months , and one T that was a disaster and only lasted 2 sessions. So 3 I guess.

Two. I saw T1 for eight months and I'm coming up to 14 months with T2.
I once saw one for an initial session and didn't like him, so I'm not including him.

Two.
One CBT psychologist (does that count, I guess he's not strictly a therapist) for the standard free six sessions....

And then my T, two years this week!

I had a single session with a T in between to interview, that was a big NO, then I found MY T, lucky me

over the past 37 years, I've seen a total of 4 T's. In college I saw a T while I was at home on summer break. Once a week for 3 months. Then while I was at school, the dean made me go see a T (must have been a grad student? I don't know, it was about 1980). Maybe saw her a handful of times and she told me I just needed a friend (clever idiot didn't realize that I had no friends).
Then I started with a T in early 2002, saw her up until Nov. 2014 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Started with current T in Nov. 2014.

5 altogether in the past 5 years! First t I stayed with for a year and a half. She was integrative. Second t was cbt, stayed with her for a year. Third t was a clinical psychologist, she was very cold and blank slate. She sent me a friend request on Facebook then denied it! I did not like this woman at all.
Last two are gestalt and I will never go to another therapist only gestalt. They are very open and honest, take more risks. That is my experience of them anyway.

Thanks for the responses everyone! It's interesting to me that the poll is pretty even right now, and that so many people have had 6+.

Too many to count, but I learned something about myself
from each and every one, even the ones that weren't good fits,
and also those I ran like hell from after the first session!

How many T's have you had? 3
How long did you stay with each? 2 months, 4yrs, 7yrs
Were there times when you were with multiple ones at once? no
Did they all do the same type of therapy, or have you done different types with them? The first one I don't think had any particular modality. The second 2 used some form of CBT.
