I don't know how to describe my question-

Have you done meditation or visualization with your therapist?

Say, for example, you have a medical problem.
The purpose of the mediation would be to visualize healthy blood cells/medication (or whatever) rushing to defeat the source of the problem ...or visualizing the medical problem getting smaller...hoping that doing a visualization like this might have a positive impact on your medical issue...

Have you ever done anything like that?

Was it helpful?
Was it awkward?
How did you go about it?
Was your T knowledgeable about doing an exercise like this?
Were you encouraged or discouraged from doing meditations like this in the therapy hour?

This is my idea. I will talk to T about it. I don't know if it will be a waste of time or not.

one time T told me to lay on the couch and close my eyes. of course at first i was like no f you. but eventually i did, i didnt close my eyes at first though. he started talking and he told me to visualize being on a canoe in a river and he described the scene and everything then he said there were rubber duckies floating by and each one was one of my negative thoughts and he said i could observe them and watch them float on down the river, just let them pass and not get hung up on each one. ive heard this exercise before but it was with leaves so the ducks made me laugh. my Ts spin on it i guess.

i found it helpful bc it helped me to relax and get a glimpse of how mindfulness works. my T is really into mindfulness, his degree is in contemplative psychotherapy.

i would ask your T..... i think your therapist would be willing from what you have shared

I used to do a visualization with my T to help me feel safe after talking about trauma stuff. Not quite the same as what you are talking about though

Yes, I meditate to ward off an asthma attack. Also for chronic pain, like my arthritis and degenerating disks. My grandfather started me meditating just to feel calm and relaxed when I was two years old, so it didn't feel awkward when I started health meditations.

It's harder to learn meditation as an adult, because all our senses and attention are roving all over the place. But it's worth the effort of learning. It can be an instant path to relaxation, and I do believe it can speed physical healing.

I wish you the best.

I do that sort of thing but not with the therapist. I find it useful. I have gone it with groups and I do it alone. I like doing it both ways. For me, it would not be safe to do with the therapist - but if one does feel safe enough with a therapist then I think it would be okay.

All 3 of my t's use visualization with me. T1 has me imagine my younger parts doing things they enjoy. Mostly having to do with animals. T2 has me imagine a safe place while doing emdr. T3 asks me to visualize young parts being totally heard and understood by an adult, who offers everything they need.

My therapist does guided meditation with a lot of his clients. I prefer to work on meditation on other ways, but I think your idea would be totally something my therapist would be open to. I don't think it would be a waste of time at all. I hope it works out well for you!

I emailed T and asked her. I asked her if she had done this before, if she thought it was a good use of our time or whether it was a dumb idea...

T said it wasn't a dumb idea and, yes, we can work on that.

PrevT wrote she has used visualizations with clients before...mainly visualizing calm..

I could use that visualization, too! Ha.

I don't know, we will see where it goes. I hope I can get into it. It would help me spin my situation towards a positive direction rather than negative foreboding.

I really need help dealing with the emotional components of my medical issue.
