My counselor is an LPC and she's great. I've seen Ph.Ds and I have friends that are licensed and teaching Ph.Ds. What matters only is the connection you make with your therapist. A Ph.D can be great or they can be cold and removed and wrapped up in theory.

I would encourage you to go ahead and meet with people. If you're looking to connect with a decent human being, I honestly don't see any difference in the quality of care other than the price.
Thanks for this!

Yup. I have two Ph.D friends whom I wouldn't trust as a client at all. I know for a fact one of them was blatantly disregarding their own counter-transference issues, while simultaneously refusing to get help for their own severe emotional disorders. The other had no emotional equanimity whatsoever and was emotionally abusive to their own partner. Truth be told both of these people did help some people but it wasn't their Ph.D. that made it happen.

So um, yeah. A Ph.D means nothing in terms of capability to be a good therapist. It's all about personal connection which unfortunately can only be vetted by trial and error.

I have seen an LCSW, a PhD, and current t is an LPC. The connection and the relationship have been the biggest factor in my healing - the LCSW and the PhD, years ago, no connection at all. Never a chance for a "relationship" to be built with either one. Had no success with either. But current t, we connected from the first phone call, and have built an amazingly therapeutic relationship. In addition to her master's and license, she has 3 years of additional training in jungian depth therapy. Yeah I'd say for me it's so all about the relationship, not the degrees....
Thanks for this!
