Yes - it helps me deal with other people who might have the same response to as the therapist. I have the tendency to ramble on about pet topics or anything in general when I'm anxious, due to a fear of awkward silences and sheer loneliness. So I overshare to extremely casual acquaintances who seem accepting, and it took me a long time to realise that from their body language, they were likely bored and irritated. Ex T has expressed frustration about my rambling, and irritation with me. It hurt to hear, but then I realise these tendencies of mine drive people away. |

Yes. it helps me. i tend to shut off my feelings. seeing my therapist get angry, sad, etc, helps me see that its ok to have feelings too.

If only one person is going to be honest, it should be them. Brutally honest?...well no, but if I'm facing a situation wrong, tell me. And maybe what how they would go about it.

I want to know if the therapist is having a feeling because it 1) helps remind me that they are human 2) depending on the reaction (i.e. laughing), prevents me from immediately jumping to the conclusion that they are laughing at me or having some sort of adverse reaction towards me 3) in the case that they are reacting to something completely apart from me and our conversation, it gives me an explanation for the distraction, or connection, or whatever is drawing their attention away from our immediate conversation
I might not always like the feeling they are expressing or why they are expressing it, but I would rather know and have everything out in the open.
