What are some of the good ones? I need some distractions this week

My favorite was always Ordinary People (if you haven't seen this, it is a must).
Thanks for this!

I tend towards comedies:
What About Bob
What's New Pussycat
Analyze this (i don't like Billy Crystal but I adore Lisa Kudrow)

And for tv I loved Headcase and Web Therapy (lisa kudrow again) and Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist
And of course Ally McBeal

One of the best books I read was by Roberston Davies and in one book had the lawyer write arguments defending himself to the therapist
The other book is Other Women by Lisa Ather

Not a book or movie, but the HBO show In Treatment was excellent. It was based off an Israeli show called BePipul, I believe. I was so sorry to see that show leave the air.

The book August, by Judith Rossner. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Could be triggering, though. It's fiction.

I thought Robin Williams was great until I started T. Now though I have issues. He tells other people about the sessions and terminates without notice! I still like the film though.

I love In Treatment though I just can't get into the third series. My T has seen it too so we've talked about why I identity with certain things in it.

A Beautiful Mind

Awakenings (Robin Williams character is based on Oliver Sachs).

Both are fascinating. More about mental illness than therapy though.

Hannah & Her Sisters
Antwoine Fisher
One Flew Over the Cockoo's Nest

Note: before reading Sybil, research what has been learned since. She probably didn't have DID. She probably had something physiological (I can't remember the name of it, maybe pernicious anemia) that could account for some of her symptoms, and a therapist with ethical issues in treatment.

Even though I don't care the TV show, I still like Charlie Sheen's therapist in "Two and a Half Men" and know lots of people liked "Monk"'s therapist?

Whatever you do, don't read I am the Cheese by Robert Cormier. If I were into wishing I had not read a book about "therapy", that would be the book.

That was an intense book!! Just slightly dated. I read it last summer.

My Favorite Books:
Standing in the Shadows by Philip Bromberg
Awakening the Dreamer by Philip Bromberg
In the Shadow of the Tsunami by Philip Bromberg

Awakenings by Oliver Sachs
(I had to skip over the technical parts because it was difficult to read, but I liked the book a lot better than the movie. This was just awesome!)

The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sachs
(This guy is brilliant

Attachment is Psychotherapy by David J. Wallin
(I read this awhile ago and I think it was good but it wasn't as good as Bromberg's books, imo)

**About behavior, but not about the therapeutic relationship
Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Dealing with People You Can't Stand by Dr. Rick Brinkman and Dr. Rick Kirschner
*(This book includes good information on how to deal with difficult relationships. It breaks people down into personalities like the Tank, the Sniper, but it helps people by talking about the psychology of these people so they can be better understood)

Movies/T.V. Shows
In Treatment on HBO
(I used to watch this and thought it was interesting enough. The therapist was unethical, though.)

I haven't watched any movies or T.V. shows about therapy that I remember. I'll have to watch Ordinary People, I haven't seen it.

"The Flock" by Joan Frances Casey was great. It is written by someone who went to therapy for DID.

Totally recommend Ordinary People- I believe it won Best Picture and several acting awards. It deals with the breakdown of an upper-middle class family...when the movie (closely follows the book) begins their teenage son has just returned from a mental hospital after attempting to take his life. The therapy scenes between Timothy Hutton (the son) and Judd Hirsch (the psychiatrist) are so well acted.
Thanks for this!

I definitely will have to watch that one, thanks!

These were already mentioned, but I love the comedy series Headcase and the drama series In Treatment.

Sometimes when I'm in T I feel like I'm in an episode of In Treatment and I'll look around for the camera. Haha!

i also loved both of the Ts in Monk. In fact, that was what made me decide to go to therapy again. I also had a thing for the T in Two and a half men. But she is a lesbian like me... hee hee. So it might just be a case of I think she is hot. :-)

For newer movies, I LOVED the movie Side Effects. That is actually more about the T than the client! Made me really respect my T more.

Can I add Prince of Tides? It's tricky because she's not actually his therapist, but his sister's. Still, there's definitely a healing relationship between them. (And the healing part goes both ways.) So if you have any sort of T relationship fantasies, it likely will aggravate those.

Still, I've loved it for years. It's kind of like therapy p*rn to me. But I've been looking to be rescued for approximately forever, which, I think, is why it's so appealing to me.

I've never seen Ordinary People, but I've read it a few times, and definitely second (or third or whatever) that recommendation.

I was really interested in When Rabbit Howls when I was a teenager. And I really enjoyed the relationship between Tony and his T in The Sopranos, too.

Love this topic!

I'll have to check out Prince of Tides....and I loved the therapy aspect in sopranos too.

When Rabbit Howls....that sounds familiar but I can't place the story.
