My coworkers were very kind and handed me a gorgeous orchid plant and an envelope with about $150 in restaurant gift cards and cash they had collected for us as we travel down for the funeral. I was a bit floored as they pulled that together in a matter of a few hours. My department chair said I am well loved. She had gotten about half of that and had gone out to get the gift cards, and when she returned people kept bringing her more money so she just handed the rest to me in cash.

My sister and I have been working on service plans and obituary all day. My brother-in-law is paying to hire musicians to play. Mom was an organist and very much the reason my sisters and I became musicians. As a family we will also be singing a piece during the service. My sister and I may sing a duet if we decide we can hold it together to do so.

I'm actually okay at this point. I've shed a few tears, but I think I am mostly relieved that she didn't suffer and went quickly. That would have been much harder.

I've received dozens of messages of love and condolence through Facebook after we posted an announcement of her passing this morning. She was highly loved by many, many people.

We are leaving after our son's high school graduation Saturday morning and will be gone for about a week. Besides the service on Monday, there will be a graveside service a few days later; our family has a funeral plot in the town where my father grew up a few hours away from where they currently live.

Dad is okay. We were all just thrown by how quickly after we placed her in hospice she passed, but I've seen it play out that way for many over the years. I think she felt able to let go once she was no longer in her house and no longer being primarily cared for by my dad.
the same thing happened to my grandma. she finally agreed to go into care and ended up dying a day later. at least i got to see her the day before. im sorry for you loss i know its very painful

Glad to hear you're getting by. Cooking helps relax me, too! And no need to apologize--we were just making sure you were OK.

We interrupt normal Couch activities for a public service announcement.

Tomorrow is National Donut Day. Here's how to cash in.

Those of you into strangely-flavored Oreos should be able to find jelly donut Oreos in Walmart stores beginning this weekend.

This has been a public service announcement of the Couch.

I actually don't like Krispy Kreme for the same reason you mention.

Sugar is brain food! I have that on medical authority (my mother).

I'm not a donut fan except for the jelly donuts this one shop down the street makes during Hanukkah that are outofthisworldamazing. More yeasty than sweet.

Those things are seriously mindblowing. Raspberry filling, you can also get chocolate but why guild the lily

Yesterday was my first actual day of home tutoring my daughter. She was really focused and worked hard. I can't see why the teachers say she was inattentive, maybe she was being distracted by the noise of the other kids.
Tomorrow we go to the adolescent mental health service to see about her social anxiety

Sugar is added to almost all the processed food sold here. Campbell's and Progresso add sugar to canned soup, it is in commercially made bread, coffee creamer, tomato sauce etc.
If we eat almost anywhere other than home and anything other than completely from scratch - sugar is added in odd foods =not just the obvious oreos, donuts, and twinkies

Wow that is surprising. Someone was telling me about the marketing of junk food in low income areas vs higher income areas in America. The person said according to tjis documentary they watched in a nutrition class, corner stores are subsidised ( I think) by the junk food company to place their products at the front of the store and fruit and vegetable at the back. I have not looked for this video so it might not be true.

Writing my mother's obituary. A bit surreal. I've done a lot of writing in my life, but never an obituary. This is a first.

Evening couch.

I am home from my stint at the CVS near my house (which is also near the school I work at during the year). I was running drive thru tonight and some of the kids I worked with this past year came through with their parents to pick up scripts. One kid got smacked by his mom for cursing when I said hi to him (just "oh s h i t" like he was surprised, but his mama was not pleased, lol).

I still need to work on my last assignment for my masters course...and clean my room. It looks like a tornado ripped through it. Or like the garbage truck overturned into it.

I have not been in a corner store for years that sold fruits and vegetables except for the odd brown banana.

The problem is more that supermarkets have fled the inner cities, at least here in the East.

Which is more important right now? Working on my assignment due Monday or cleaning a bit? Decisions, decisions...or maybe I can go to sleep. That reminds me...I should probably go take my evening meds. I need to get better about taking them regularly...they do level out my mood when I take them...it's just remembering to take them.
